-World Wrestling Federation Entertainment is experiencing some legal troubles with their newly founded professional football league, the XFL. Apparently one of the XFLs team mascots of the Hitmen was already in use by a Calgary hockey team in which Bret Hart was an original owner too.
The following was reported by Bloomberg News on the issue:
The National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, owners of the minor-league Calgary Hitmen, said they are exploring whether they have grounds for a lawsuit against the XFL football league, which said its New York- based franchise would also be called the Hitmen.
The XFL, jointly owned by the World Wresting Federation Entertainment Inc. and General Electric Co.'s NBC, disclosed the names of its eight teams on Thursday. It already changed the name of its Birmingham, Alabama, team to Thunderbolts from Blast after negative public reaction. Birmingham was the site of several bombings during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
Two years after joining the Western Hockey League as an expansion team, the Hitmen were sold to the Flames, who now own the trademark to the name.
``We're exploring our options, we know that our trademark extends to the U.S.,'' said Mike Holditch, the Flames' vice president of finance.
The XFL didn't return telephone calls seeking comment.
The Hitmen paid about $1.2 million to join the WHL in 1995. The original group of 17 part-owners included former WWF wrestler Bret ``Hitman'' Hart and NHL players Joe Sakic and Theoren Fleury.
The inaugural XFL season will start on Feb. 3 with each team playing a 10-game regular-season schedule.
