Vladivostok is located on the Pacific Ocean in the extreme southeasternmost part of Russia and the Maritime Territory (Primorsky Kray) of the Russian Far East. It's excellent harbor is kept ice-free during the winter and it's strategic location as the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railroad has made it the naval center for the Russian Pacific Fleet. Only open to foreign visitors from 1991, cruise passengers get a privileged insight into the Russian presence in the Pacific.
