Ed Asner returns to television as Principal Joe Danzig of Benjamin Harrison High, an inner city high school with an atmosphere so violent, it made viewers wince. The producers of this show played up the violence--a little too much. Aside from rampant vandalism and muggings, Principal Danzig also got shot in one episode.
Although this was a quality show, due mainly to its strong ensemble cast (the "faculty"), it did go over the top with its stereotypical portrayal of underpriveleged inner city kids as excessively rude, violent, and hopelessly unruly--like animals in a zoo, as the title suggests.
On the other hand, "The Bronx Zoo" never pulled its punches. This was no "Room 222"! Also, the writers were shrewd enough to realize that one principal or one teacher was not going to change these kids' lives drastically overnight, so it dwelled on the "small victories" which were still dramatic and offered some hope amidst the hell that was Benjamin Harrison High.
The likening of high school kids to animals was a bit heavy-handed, but overall this was a thoughtful and well-acted series. |
