This "integrated" comedy revolved around the friendship between a Caucasian family (The Wilsons) and a black couple (Mr. & Mrs. Bruce) who had just moved into their previously all-white neighborhood. The two families lived on Friar Tuck Lane in suburban Sherwood Forest Estates near Los Angeles.
"Love Thy Neighbor" was trying desperately to be "All in the Family" with it's broad and pointed humor aimed at racial stereotypes. I saw one or two episodes when it was first on and, to give you an example, I recall a scene where Joyce Bulifant (as Peggy Wilson) was straddling a watermelon and trying to hide it under her skirt when the black couple entered. I don't remember what led up to that scene but that was about the gist of the humor. Slapstick and outrageous vs. the thought-provoking humor of "All in the Family".
As in the case with most copycat shows, viewers usually opt for the originals and tune away from the cheap imitations.
PS: Joyce Bulifant would occasionally appear on "Match Game" (in the early-mid 70s) celebrity panel hosted by Gene Rayburn. |
