CBS, Mon. 10-11pm
Originally titled "L.A. Docs" but changed to the more formal "L.A. Doctors".
Capitalizing on the success of "ER", "L.A. Doctors" borrowed the "L.A." from "L.A. Law" and followed it with the word "Doctors". This show, then, was about doctors who lived and worked in Los Angeles. And that was about it, folks.
In fact, even if you didn't get it from the title, this show never let you forget that it took place in L.A. Every scene shouted "L.A.!" at you. Every panoramic shot contained L.A. landmarks. It was more like a Los Angeles travelogue than it was a dramatic TV series. The wardrobe, the hairstyles, the attitudes, the dialogue were all distinctly L.A. The actors did everything short of wearing, "Hi! I'm from L.A." T-shirts to get across the fact that they were indeed from Los Angeles.
As for the characters--well, they were all well lit, wore colorful clothes, and their hair was done up nice but despite it all, their personalities remained pitifully drab. In addition, the plots were all very contrived and extremely predictable. I had fun turning down the volume on my TV and supplying the characters with my own made-up dumb dialogue. Often our words would even match.
This show lasted most of its first season...then passed away. |
