Not to be confused with TV's other great Conrads: "Conrad Bain" (who played Phillip Drummond on "Diff'rent Strokes" and earlier played Dr. Arthur Harmon married to Rue McClanahan on "Maude"), "Conrad Janis" (who can be seen conducting to the opening theme montage of "Mork & Mindy"--he played Fred O'Connell, Mindy's father), "Robert Conrad" (Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington of "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and infamous Eveready Energizer spokesman), and "William Conrad" (TV's "Cannon", rotund, bald, mustachioed detective).
"Conrad Bloom" was a successful young New York ad copyrighter surrounded by a bunch of would-be wacky women: his mom (Linda Lavin--useless without Vic Tayback), an ex-girlfriend, a whipcracking boss, a nutty sister, and a harried coworker. Steve ("Barney Miller") Landesberg played his burned-out mentor...an all-too accurate bit of casting, that.
This show was about as manufactured as it could be. A young urban setting with a couple of seasoned veteran actors--one of each sex, it tried desperately to hook every sponsor it could by targeting every possible age and sex demographic.
And if that wasn't enough--look!--the main character works for an advertising company!
The premise may have worked with "Caroline in the City" but after only 7 episodes, Conrad didn't so much as bloom, but wither. |
