The Master Plan
We will struggle for many mote years. Mainstream society will continue to classify us into a misunderstood subgroup.
We will be heckled, laughed at, and belittled to a point where our anger deepens. We must see past the shadows and into the light. When the shadow fades and is no more, the light

As I sit here in my bedroom on the first day of the new year, and the new millennium, I begin to think about what skating means to me. What is this so-called "sport" that i have dedicated three and a half years of my childhood to? What makes me continue to roll? You see, I consider myself lucky to be a skater. Skating is not like anythings else. It is not fair to call skating a "sport". In my eyes a sport involves everyone dressing in the exact same clothes, playing on a designated field or court, and taking orders from some guy/girl on the sidelines. Where is the creativity in that? There is none. I love the fact that when i go out to skate I can wear whatever I want. I'm not required to wear a special shirt with a number sprawled across my back. I also love the fact that my field or court is anywhere or anything I want it to be. And on my "field" or "court" there is no one on the sidelines telling me what to do. I do what I want, when I want to do it, on my skates.
Yes, we are lucky to be skaters. Most of us are lucky that we did not grow up with parents that made us participate in uncreative, organized sports whether we liked it or not, if you are trapped by anyone, in a sport that you dont like, I want to inspire you to stand up to them. Tell your oppressor that you dont want to participate in a sport that stangles your creative outlet. let all of the egotistical assholes jocks have their sports, because we have skating (in no way am I implying that everyone who participates in organized sports is an egotistical asshole, but we all know that most jocks are). When I put on my skates, I am my own "athlete." no one else's opinion matters and no one can tell me what to do. -Joe Taormina |
