1.0 INTRODUCTION
The SOCIETY OF WOMEN AND AIDS IN AFRICA has its origin in a small group of professional women who met in Stockholm, Sweden in June 1988 during the fourth international AIDS conference. The women were concerned with the growing incidence of HIV infection in Africa, particularly among women and children.
As individual mothers and care providers, they considered it important to advocate and improve the health profile and social conditions of the families in the continent.
SWAA was thus formed to provide a rallying point for African women to address particular problems affecting them and their families as a result of HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The Uganda chapter was established soon after the founding of the SWAA International committees in collaboration with other Agencies. It has made a significant contribution in preventing and controlling HIV/ AIDS in the country.
