Welcome to the 2003 Season of South Suburban Junior Baseball Association! Our season begins tenetively on Saturday, May 17th. The 15-year-olds to 19-year-olds will begin playing on June 2nd.

There is a NEW RAIN-OUT number, 816-763-6080.

Since 1958, South Suburban Junior Baseball Association has been providing South Kansas City youth with an opportunity to play baseball in a fun and instructive environment. The number of second and third generation players, who spend their summer nights fielding balls and running bases, exemplifies SSJBA's long tradition of cultivating a love for the game of baseball.

South Suburban Junior Baseball is competitive baseball without being cut-throat. We emphasize instruction, learning, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Each player plays in each game. Coaches may bring in a whole team or players may sign up individually and are placed on a team through a draft.

Teams will play a minimum of 12 games and as many as 18 games. The season starts in early May and is scheduled to be finished by the Fourth of July. No late games are scheduled in May due to school. The complex, located at 107th & Skiles in South Kansas City, has six ball fields. Three of these fields have lights allowing evening play.

South Suburban Junior Baseball Association has now become affiliated with AAU. The Amateur Athletic Union of the United States is the largest non-profit volunteer service organization in the U.S. dedicated to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. AAU Baseball was established in 1983 to provide an additional national level of competition for teams, players, and coaches who otherwise might not have that opportunity. Independent teams and teams affiliated with other baseball organizations are welcome to participate in AAU Association and National Championships. In 2001, 567 teams representing 46 individual states and multi-state championships competed in the 19 AAU Baseball National and National Invitational Championships. Welcome to the 2002 Season of South Suburban Junior Baseball Association! Our season begins on Saturday, May 4th, at 12:00 p.m. (noon). All teams are to assemble at the fields in uniform and will be introduced to officially open the season. This year, due to fewer teams in each division, all teams from "D" to "A" division will be playing two (2) to three (3) exhibition games with teams from Grandview Baseball Association, both at Clark-Ketterman Fields and at Grandview Fields. Also, this year's time schedule has changed slightly. The evening games will now begin at 6:15 p.m. Most of the 8:30 games will be either exhibition or double-headers. Again this year, open days are built into the schedule for make-up games due to rain.

There is a NEW RAIN-OUT number, 816-763-6080.

The regular season is scheduled to be over by the end of June. Play-offs will begin following the Fourth of July holiday and the closing ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th, at 1 p.m. with the All-Star games to follow. We are looking forward to an exciting season of baseball. A special thanks is extended to the Grandview Baseball Association for their cooperation in cross-scheduling for the 2002 season!

South Suburban Junior Baseball Association (SSJBA) has been in the south Kansas City area since 1958. Their games are now played at Clark-Ketterman Athletic Fields, located at 107th & Skiles, (1/2 mile east of Blue Ridge), in the heart of the Hickman Mills Consolidated #1 School District, Kansas City, Missouri. Each year the season begins with an Opening Day Ceremony. It is held on the first weekend of May at the fields. All of the teams from “A” Division (13 & 14 year-olds) to “D” Division, Machine Pitch (7 & 8 year-olds) and if enough sign up, the "T-Ball" Division (5 & 6 year-olds) gather as the players, parents and their coaches and sponsors are introduced to the SSJBA Board of Directors, men and women who volunteer their time to provide a safe, caring environment through baseball for the student athletes in our area. Each of the teams are then introduced. As the ceremony closes, the official season begins.

The 2001 Season brought a fresh concept for our baseball schedule. Throughout May there were no late games on week nights. Every Wednesday and Sunday were left unscheduled to make up rained-out games. All teams played up to 24 games each. Playoffs for “A”, “B” and “C” divisions were scheduled following the July 4th holiday and the end of the season was concluded with the Closing Ceremony on July 13th. Because of the limited number of players in the "D" Division, Pitching Machine and the "T-Ball" Division, a combined new "D" Division, Coaches Pitch was created for the players, aged 5, 6, 7 & 8 years of age. SSJBA had a fun-filled season where kids learned more about baseball and our community enjoyed free baseball entertainment at Clark-Ketterman Fields.

At the Opening Day Ceremony of the 2000 season, the SSJBA Board of Directors honored a dedicated board member of South Suburban by naming field #2 the "Richard Harkins Field". There are plans to post a plaque on the backstop naming the field.
