Valletta, or Valetta, the prime seaport and capital of Malta, is located in the northeastern part of a rather small island in the central part of the Mediterranean. The port has two excellent harbors and presents a marvelous view coming from the sea. Situated southeast of Sicily, it has long served as the crossroads of maritime trade. It's strategic position resulted in its dubious distinction as the most bombed city in World War II. Valletta's urban area is a prime example of city planning in the Renaissance period and is a world heritage site of the first magnitude.
