Gibraltar, located at the southernmost part of Spain, is restricted to a narrow. three-mile-long peninsula that is dominated by a 1,400-ft limestone hill called the Rock of Gibralter. It has been known as the northern component of the Pillars of Hercules which lies astride the 16-mile-wide entrance (eight miles wide at its narrowest point) to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. Formerly of great naval importance, the British dependency is now a thriving tourist destination.
