HISTORY "The Worlds Oldest Football Club"
******* """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
The worlds oldest football club was formed in
a greenhouse off the East Bank Road Sheffield
on October 24th 1857, by two army officers who
were stationed at Hillsborough Barracks.
Prior to this momentous date, there had been
a number of winter ball games played. These
were however confined to public schools such
as Charterhouse, Rugby, and Eton, and all had
developed their own rules.
Colonel Nathaniel Cresswick and Major William
Priest had the idea of developing a game, that
could be played by anyone using a standard set
of rules, and after studying the various
public school rules Cresswick, and Priest then
created a set of rules that embraced the best
features of these public school rules.
Simultanously they created and formulated rules
which were to become the constitution of the
first football club,Sheffield Football Club was
formed.
By 1862 some fifteen clubs existed around the
Sheffield area and from this time until the
start of the professional game Sheffield were
the dominant force in the game.In 1863 Henry
Chambers an official of the club was present
at a meeting that launched the English Football
Association, which was responsible for the real
growth of the game throughout the country.
It was in 1872 that the first ever international
match was played between England and Scotland
and Sheffield FC was repesented in the England
team by the legendary Sir Charles "JC" Clegg.
JC went on to become a league referee and then
officiated in FA Cup finals in 1882, & 1892.
He eventually became at the ripe old age of 73
president of the English Football Association.
He was subsequently knighted in 1927.
During this time Sheffield had possibly their
finest hour, when in 1904 they won the Amateur
Cup at the Valley Parade Bradford beating Ealing
1-0.
************SHEFFIELD****************
As the game became more popular, professional
players were introduced into the ranks of many
teams, but Sheffield fiercely opposed this and
sadly this coincided with less frequent success,
and a period of decline.
Whilst football continued to grow in popularity
Sheffield the club which started it all were in
a period of financial difficulties, and only
just managed to survive.
The highlight in recent years was in 1977, when
Sheffield FC reached the FA Vase final at Wembley
drawing 1-1 against Billericay, but loosing the
replay.
In 1989 & 1991 they won the Northern Counties East
division one title, whilst back in 1994 they took
the Sheffield Senior Cup by beating Worksop Town.
From East Bank to Olive Grove, then onto Brammall
Lane, onto Abbeyfield Park recent years have seen
the club lead a nomadic life with additional
venues sited at Hillsborough, Middlewood Road,
the Owlerton Stadium better known for Speedway,
and recently the 25,000 seater Don Valley Stadia.
Plans are however afoot to provide a permanent
home for the "Oldest Club in the World", and then
initiating a new successfull era for this great
club.
