PLAYOFFS
The Oilers were ousted by the Stars in 4 games in this years playoffs in the 1st round. Game 4 went to 3OT, and the rest of the games in the series were all one goal differentials.THE OILERS WILL BE BACK, HUNGRIER AND ORGANIZED NEXT YEAR!
April 2
The Oilers recently pulled off some huge deals, but they have had a cloud called 'inconsistency' hanging over them all year long. They appeared to be poised for a stellar 98-99 season, but they lost Cujo, Weight held-out and then got injured early in the year, and then Kelly Buchberger, the team's captain went down with injury. All through this, talk of financial trouble and problems with Boris Mironov surrounded the Oilers.
THE TRADES
The dealing started with the inevitable. Mironov along with Dean McCammond went to Chicago for Chad Kilger, Ethan Moreau, Dan Cleary and Christian Laflamme.
Glen Sather also stole Tommy Salo from the Islanders in exchange for Mats Lindgren and an 8th rounder.
The Oilers then acquired Jason Smith and Vladimir Vorobiev, Smith being the more important defenceman.
THE FUTURE
Do the Oilers have a team they want to keep together for 5 years now? They look good if they stick with the players they have now. Offensive defense is solid with Hamrlik and Niinimaa, and now they have two stay-at-home guys in Laflamme and J.Smith, a few bruisers in McSorley and Sean Brown and a sharp rookie Tom Poti. Goaltending is no longer a factor with the arrival of Salo, he should gain confidence in Edmonton with each game.
If the forward lines can stay together improvement should come. Weight and Guerin have stepped up as offensive leaders, though the rest are all occasional contributors on offense. Speed is there( Marchant and Grier), Checking and leadership (Kilger, Buchberger) and except for a few others, the rest need to find a niche in this team, before Slats finds a niche for them on the trading blocks.
THE BOTTOM LINE
This team is another very, very different story in the playoffs..... Go figure.
