Resident Evil Re-Release (Dual Shock Support)

November 28, 1998 - Resident Evil 4

RESIDENT EVIL CODE: VERONICA

TOKYO - Resident Evil 4? Hardly. But one of the biggest announcements made today came when Capcom's Yoshiki Okamoto confirmed that a Bio Hazard (Resident Evil) game is in fact in development for the Dreamcast.

After fooling the audience by first stating that the zombie game they've been working on was "Dream Makaimura" (Dream Ghouls 'N' Ghosts - they even played a cool rendition of the Ghouls 'N' Ghosts theme music to go along with the bogus announcement), Okamoto introduced Shinji Mikami, the producer of Bio Hazard 2, who came to the stage wearing a S.T.A.R.S. jacket. He explained that there was in fact no Makaimura game in development, but rather an all-new Bio Hazard game, entitled Bio Hazard CODE: Veronica.

Biohazard CODE: Veronica is set three months after the end of Bio Hazard 2, with the player once again controlling Claire Redfield. After flying to Europe to investigate the disappearance of her brother Chris, Claire is abducted and taken to an isolated tropical island where some familiar rotting friends once again start popping up.

Veronica features a significant break with previous titles in the series - all the backgrounds are now done in full polygons, allowing the camera to move, following the action and a first person view. There are also possible environmental changes, such as collapsing ceilings or toppling pillars. Veronica also makes use of the special effects of the Dreamcast hardware, like dramatic lighting and shadow and characters with skin so you don't see the jagged polygon edges. Imagine the detail on that.

Bio Hazard CODE: Veronica should be released sometime after April 1999. Capcom did not specify an exact release date.

UPDATE -

Resident Evil Code: Veronica for Dreamcast is reported to be multiplayer. It will have co-op and deathmatching over the internet using Dreamcast using the built-in modem it has.

Pete Menzies

Sources close to Capcom have indicated that the company's best selling survival horror masterpiece, Bio Hazard 2 (Resident Evil 2 in the US), may be headed to Sega's Dreamcast in the not-too-distant future. The game was just released for the PC in Japan, and the current buzz is that the game will be ported over to Dreamcast in order to tide RE fans over until Code: Veronica is released later this year.

Capcom won't confirm or deny these reports, but considering how cheap it'll be for Capcom to bring the game to DC (basically it's just manufacturing costs that it needs to worry about), it seems likely. On the other hand, over 2.5 million Japanese gamers already own Bio Hazard 2, so it will need to throw in something extra in order to make the purchase worthwhile. A playable demo of Code: Veronica is not at all out of the question, and in fact seems rather likely.

New screens of three upcoming Dreamcast games have surfaced in Japan. Sega Saturn Magazine recently ran these screens. Now you can take a look at art that hit Japanese newsstands just days ago. Click here to see these screenshots.

September 29, 1998 - The Re-Releases

Resident Evil Director's Cut (Dual Shock Version) is being re-released and is now in stores. I'll check it out when it comes out and review it on my site. Also, Resident Evil 2: The Director's Cut is coming some time this winter. It should include more changes that the original director's cut did (did anyone really notice them?) and I'll review it as well. Top

The Re-Releases

The confirmed U.S. release date for RE2:DSV is (well, was) November 27, so its in stores now. To see my review of it soon, click here. Several sources had said X-mas, or January, so I was wary to put up a rumor. But this is straight from Capcom, so its true. Top

RE3 (RESIDENT EVIL: NEMESIS)

RESIDENT EVIL: NEMESIS

RE3 Info

"Capcom has announced another killer late-Playstation title, Biohazard: Nemesis (a.k.a. Resident Evil: Nemesis). It's a semi-prequel to Resident Evil 2 and will feature the same winning mix of CG backgrounds and 3D characters. Although Metal Gear Solid has proved it can be done in real time, Resident Evil 2 had the suspense and refinement to avoid most of the problems with fixed camera angles. And besides, look how much trouble a lot of people are getting into with 3D cameras nowadays. With the Resident Evil movie in development and the Dreamcast Res Evil title due out around the same time near the end of this year, it's another franchise that can only get bigger."

Resident Evil fans no longer need to worry about whether they'll love or even like Dino Crisis' dinosaurs better than Resident Evil's zombies. Not only are we sure they'll like them, we also received confirmation of Capcom's intent to bring Resident Evil Nemesis, the third in the series, to PlayStation this fall, enabling gamers to enjoy them both. So, Capcom is spoiling gamers again with two entirely different games both in the "survival" genre, a little for the survival-horror fans and for the survival-panic fans. Both games are planned for fall 1999. IGNPSX called Capcom after seeing that the game was listed on a Babbages' release calendar this morning and Capcom confirmed that game is indeed official. Taking place 24 hours before and 24 hours after Resident Evil 2, this split prequel/sequel fills gamers in with details about the two star characters, Leon Kennedy and Clair Redfield and enhances the RE world with more gory horror that gamers loved so much in the first two games of the series.

September 20, 1998 - RE Movie

"As you may have heard already, Konstantin Films will be creating the Resident Evil movie. It is being directed by George Romero, the storyline is identical as when you play as Chris, mansion design will be changed a little, but characters and monsters will be the same. The cast has not yet been confirmed yet. I heard a rumor that it is planned to be rated R but I'm not sure. There was a contest where you could win a part in the movie but it ended 4-1-98. Here's one of the possible movie posters for the movie."

- The Official Resident Evil Movie Website

Bill: "Many fans have said it's a fake. You be the judge. Notice how the credits at the bottom are conveniently JPEGed enough not to read. I think it is."

Movie Update -

(Note: this is purely a rumor and should be taken as such)

After reading last month's article on videogame moviews in this very section, a PSM fan involved with the Resident Evil has leaked a copy of the script into our eager hands. The version of the script that we got may have not been the final shooting version, but it is one of the later revisions."

The story is written by Alan McElroy, the same guy who wrote the Spawn movie. While it's definitely not the greatest screenplay ever written, it does manage to capture the feel of the game quite well, and may turn out to be a pretty good movie -- especially for action/horror buffs. WARNING: If you do not want us to spoil what happens, do not read any further. But if you are a big Resident Evil fan like us, you have to know what the movie is going to be like!

It all starts off with a disturbance in the Raccoon Forest, where strange animals are mutilating campers and park rangers. A S.W.A.T team is sent in and is quickly destroyed by the mysterious creatures in the forest. At this point, the government gets involved. It recruits Wesker (who is in an asylum for some reason that is never explained) to break into a lab in the forest, presumably to rescue some scientists there. Wesker recruits his team members based on the specialties: Barry Barton is the all around military expert who has retired and now runs a restaurant, Chris Redfield is the expert at combat, Jill Valentine is a munition expert, and Brad Vickers is the medic. Unknown to the rest of the team, however, is that Brad is actually an imposter named Mike-- he is trying to find his girlfriend Becky, who was on the original S.W.A.T team sent into Raccoon Forest.

The team sets down in Raccoon forest and is almost immediately attacked by wild mutated dogs. They make a run for the lab.mansion in the middle of the forest and just barely make it there alive. They all get inside of the mansion, and that;s where things really heat up. They confront more of the dogs, along with giant wasps, tarantulas, and of course, zombies. It's all-out tension and action as the group keeps losing members to each new threat, and ammo runs lower and lower. Eventually they find the scientist they are supposed to rescue, and it turns out that the whole situation was an insiduous trap. They were to be infected with the T-virus and then allowed to escape to spread the virus to the rest of the world. Jill and Chris (the only ones left) get a hold of the antidote and escape from the building just as it is exploding, only to be persued by the tyrant (who actually turns out to be a mutated Wesker). They finally fight off the Tyrant, take the antidote, and walk off into the sunset.

The films current form is ultra violent. It will be interesting to see whether it's toned down for a PG-13 rating, or if the director just goes all-out for an "R". It is also interesting to note that no mention is made of either the S.T.A.R.S. team or Umbrella Corp. But overall, the screenplay is a good basis for a potentially great movie, and we can't wait to see how it turns out!"

MEMORABLE SCENES:

While the movie's dialog isn't exactly top-notch, quite a few tense scenes stand out.

Team members sneak their way across a room filled with corpses that might be zombies (ooo, creepy!).

A giant spider corners the team when they run out of ammo, with zombies also about to bust in.

Team members get trapped in a service elevator, where they are surrounded by mutated hornets.

And what RE movie would be complete without a Jill Valentine shower scene?
