CHARLES ADDISON HENDERSON
Charles Addison Henderson was born in Laurens County, SC on 5 Nov 1838. He was the sixth son and seventh child born to Mastin Lee Henderson and Elizabeth Brock Henderson.
Charles along with his brothers entered the Civil War by signing up with the 14th South Carolina Infantry, Company C. His rank was listed as Cpl/Sgt. Charles, his brothers, and relatives participated in most every major battle under General Lee during the Civil War. He lost his next younger brother, William P. Henderson, on 30 Jun 1862 when he was killed in battle at South Anna near Richmond, Virginia.
After the war was over, the boys returned to South Carolina to help put the pieces back together. None of the Henderson boys stayed in South Carolina for very long and most went to Alabama and Texas. As far as I can determine, Charles was the first of our clan to move to Texas. He appeared on the 1870 U.S. Census for Lamar County, Paris Beat #2, with an enumeration date of 13 Aug 1870.
Charles met and later married Arretta Skidmore on 4 Feb 1871. She was the daughter of John Skidmore and Sarah A. Miller. Arretta was born in Lamar County and had lived there until their marriage. There were eight children born to this union:
A. John Plummer on 20 Jun 1873 in Lamar Co., Texas. He married Winnie M. Goin and they moved to Rattan, Oklahoma in Pushmataha County. They never had children. John died on 19 May 1932 and was buried at the Belzoni Cemetery west of Rattan.
B. Charles Mastin on 23 Sep 1875 in Lamar Co., Texas. He married Eunice Ethel Edwards, a neighbor in the Klondike area. The had a total of five children. Charles Mastin died on 27 Dec 1927 and was buried at the Klondike Baptist Church Cemetery near his parents and other family members.
C. Anna May on 8 Oct 1877 at Sylvan, Lamar Co., Texas. She married Edward Taylor Fleming on 5 Aug 1892. They had a total of twelve children. Anna May was my grandmother. They moved to the Indian Territory in January 1903 and settled at Belzoni, Oklahoma. She died on 20 Nov 1959 and was buried at the Belzoni Cemetery. Taylor died later on 28 Dec 1962 and was buried next to Anna May.
D. James Samuel on 8 Jun 1880 at Antiock, Delta Co., Texas. He married Lucy Ellen Robnett on 29 Jun 1902. They had a total of nine children. They farmed in Klondike where most of the family was located, but moved to west to Lamb County, Texas. Sam died on 8 Dec 1959 and was buried at the Spring Lake Cemetery, Lamb Co., Texas.
E. Edna Earl on 16 Aug 1885 in Delta Co., Texas. She married George Hilbert Veal. They had one child. Edna Earl died in 1963 and her place of burial is not known at this time.
F. Jennie Lou in Aug 1888 in Delta Co., Texas. She married Walter B. Smith. They had two children. Jennie died in 1963 and was buried at the Klondike Baptist Cemetery near the rest of the family.
G. Richard Lee in Aug 1891 in Delta Co., Texas. He married Ruby Beatrice McDaniel in Oklahoma. They had three children but later divorced. He later married Louise Moore. Richard was buried in Cooper, Texas at the Oaklawn Cemetery.
H. William Henry on 26 Oct 1897 in Delta Co., Texas. He married Agnes Marie (last name unknown). He was killed in a fight at Dallas, Texas on 3 Sep 1946. He was later buried at the Shiloh Cemetery in Delta County, Texas.
Charles Addison died on 13 Apr 1913 and was buried at the Klondike Baptist Cemetery, just a couple of miles where he lived for most of his married life. Arretta Skidmore Henderson was buried along side of Charles on 19 May 1932. Charles Addison Henderson was one of those early trail blazers that helped settle East Texas in the early days.
