PHOTOS OF CASTLE GARDEN
http://members.aol.com/W2837/NYHarbor/CGindex.html

CASTLE GARDEN
In the 1860's and 1870's era, immigrants were led into a large hall and asked only questions from the information, as written, on the ship's passenger list.

In 1882 through 1890 the reception of immigrants at Castle Garden was handled as a joint State/Federal venture. From accounts of immigrants experiences that I have read, things changed in the "large hall" during this period. The passenger lists were still used but only as a reference.

Each immigrant was allegedly asked more personal information pertaining to their health, destination, country/town/village of origin, family, monetary status, etc. This information was recorded by the immigration
officer. It is this data that I am searching for.

Information on the fire loss only refers to data being destroyed from Castle Garden as "administrative records", no mention of immigrant records.

On April 1, 1890 the Secretary of the Treasury terminated the contract with New York State. On April 18, 1890 the Treasury Department assumed total control of immigration at the Port of New York. The New York State authorities refused to allow the federal government to use the
Castle Garden facilities. On April 19, 1890 the U.S. set up temporary quarters at the old Barge Office near the Customhouse on the southeast foot of Manhattan.

So, could New York State have these "immigration records" stashed someplace????

The passenger manifests are on Microfilm at the National Archives of Canada, in Ottawa (NAC). The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival. You can borrow theses reels on an Inter Library Loan (ILL). You can find the
details for this procedure at this URL

http://www.archives.ca/www/Genealogy.html

You are able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and outside North America. The LDS do not have copies of the Canadian passenger lists, post 1900 Quebec, and post 1899 Halifax. These microfilms contain arrivals from
ALL ports.

Whether you are searching 1855 or 1890, you still need to research the film number through the National Archives or
the Family History Library, and search the films. Ellis Island . . .Castle Garden, makes no difference. It still all comes down to researching the microfilms/fishe.

Remember, these links are terrific, and a great "tool"
but they shouldn't be used as the only source of research. Finding your ancestors passenger list, immigration and natualization papers takes letter writing, ordering passenger films through your local Family History Center or Library, or going to the National Archives and searching film after film. Now that's REALLY searching. Granted, you
may find some links on the lists, but not all of your family can be found through the internet, be it the Ships List or any other internet source. The internet is a tool, but to find your family, and to prove it's them, you need documentation. . .actual passenger lists, social security records, birth records, marriage records, and so on.
