STAFF REVEALED!!!

May 31st, 2006:  That's right.  With the school year coming to an end and most of the writers going off to college, we here at TNST decided to reveal who we were to answer any questions you all had.

Jonathon Simmer

Editor-in-Chief, Webmaster, Writer

is Frank Hood

Yup, that's me.  I'm going to Ball State University in the fall to major in Entrepreneurship and minor in Political Science.  I, along with David Reynolds and CJ Dodd, came up with the idea for The North Side Times after the school newspaper kept getting censored.

Jose Daniels

Vice Editor, Writer

is David Reynolds

Although he never actually wrote an article for TNST, he did assist in every aspect of the paper.  He was slated to write several articles and several problems arose and they never materialized.  Nonetheless, he was a huge part of this paper.

Iroquois Pliskin

Writer, Graphic Junkie

is CJ Dodd

He wrote the most controversial articles and ended up getting expelled for other writings he did but he was definately a motivator of this paper.  Without his off the wall antics, nothing would've gotten done.

Braddock Winchester

Writer, Cartoonist

is Dean Beever

A surprising add to the staff because I honestly never thought he'd agree to it.  A definate jem of the staff and brought a great amount of fun.  Also the creator of our only political cartoon.

Eva Carter

College Ambassador, Writer

is Krista Fanning

Our wonderful friend from ISU agreed to write for the paper thinking it would do some good and then quit after seeing how ranty our first edition was.  After a little persuation and all the support from students and teachers, she agreed to come back on board.  Her writing was not only superb but gave this paper some serious legitimacy (so we're told).

Ssari Midzmo

Writer

is Melissa Grimson

The only one of the staff who actually plans to make Journalism her life, her writings for the paper were not only to support the cause but to gain experience.  She was very motivated throughout the entire process and always was the first one to have her stuff done.  She was also willing to tackle some of the issues that the other writers wouldn't.

Wolf Beretta

Writer

is Robbie Barnett

Actually a random addition to the staff because he happened to be with CJ during our first (and only) staff meeting.  Instead of talking in code the entire time, we just made him staff and let him work and stuff and then he did well and we were really excited.  Definately our other controversial writer of the group.

Natalia Rivken

Writer

is a junior so we won't reveal their name so they can work next year without fear of retaliation.

 May 15th, 2006:  2nd Edition Released!!!

Yes, it's a smaller edition.  Between school and some writers being spooked by Administration cracking down on CJ, not many articles got written for this one.  This will be the last edition for this set of writers but The North Side Times may return next year if current underclassmen stand up and take control and wish to continue it.  If you're interested in becoming a staff member of this paper for next year, contact me at thenorthsidetimes@hotmail.com .  Towards the end of the year, all the current staff member's real identities will be released.

May 1st, 2006:  One of the recent guestbook entries says:

"Hmm...wondering how this statement jibes with Jonathan's subsequent statements in the Save the CJ campaign.
"On top of this, we need another dean so the overflow can be controlled. Once the overflow gets handled, the school should start cracking down on every offense, impose harsher punishments and suspend or expel more students. Once the administration becomes more like a police force and less like social workers, then the school can truly be straightened out."
Are we now picking and choosing which offenses to crack down on?
The line between free speech and slander is sometimes a thin one. Perhaps we should all tred carefully."

No, I wasn't saying they should pick and choose what offenses to punish but that being able to go and find things that happened off school grounds and punish a kid for that isn't fair nor shouldn't be legal.  It's one thing when it happens in the confines of Woodruff or is threatening towards Woodruff but this offense doesn't fit either of those.  If they are going to use things that happen off school grounds, which they have done on several occasions, they should make the punishment fair or punish the worse offenses harder, not lighter like what has been done.  It essentially comes down to, like I said in the article, that CJ was expelled for simple schoolyard type name-calling when worse offenses go by with less punishment.  It's a matter of the school being unfair in it's punishing of students.

April 30th, 2006:  The new article is up under The Save CJ Campaign so please check it out.  Thanks!

April 28th, 2006:  New edition within the next week or two.  We've all finially gotten some time.  New single article regarding a very important issue will be coming out here in a few days.  The administration has finally gone and done it.  Stay tuned to find out.

April 16th, 2006:  So we're not for sure when the next edition will be out.  Spring Break has been busy and the bulk of the staff have huge projects due after break so we're focusing on those right now.  Graduating is the most important thing to us so sorry if we keep moving the release date back.

April 11th, 2006:  This next edition will not be released this week.  Expect it next week.  Sorry for the delay.

April 6th, 2006:  New staff member!  Natalia Rivken has joined the NST team and looks to keep the paper running into the future.  Expect big things from her.  She'll have an article in the next edition, which comes out next Thursday.

We're sorry for the mass amount of popups, but we're poor high school students with no money trying to fight the fight.  If you want to give us money so you don't have to deal with popups, please email us.  It's only $20.  That, or you could just put your popup blocker on.

Mission Statement:

There are thousands who are in opinion opposed to the [problems], who yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them... They hesitate, and they regret, and sometimes they petition; but they do nothing in earnest and with effect.  They will wait, well disposed, for other to remedy the evil... At most, they give only a cheap vote, and a feeble countenance and Godspeed, to the right, as it goes by them.

- Civil Disobedience
Henry David Thoreau

Woodruff High School is riddled with problems, plain and simple.  Some problems stem from the administration, others from society in general, but the bulk come from the students themselves.  Teachers can't publicly speak out because it would outrage the students and if you outrage the students, you outrage the parents and outraged parents lead to fired teachers.  So for fear of losing their jobs, teachers stay quiet and let certain autrocities go unnoticed.  Society would rather pretend there's absolutely nothing wrong with public education instead of fixing it.  What they forget is the current students are tomorrow's society leaders.  That's a scary thought.  In the end, there's only one option, students speaking out against students, society and the administration.  But because fear of retaliation by other students, or the administration, students stay silent.  Those who do wish to voice their opinions go to mediums like the school paper, only to find it's heavily censored by the administration.  Because of all this, we've created The North Side Times, an underground paper for the students, by the students.  We, the staff of The North Side Times, are fighting back against the censorship and retaliations of free speech at Woodruff.  This is our stand and we ask fellow students to stand with us in ridding the lowlife scum from Woodruff.  These issues needed to be said, so we said them, our voices won't be silenced.  Here they are, Woodruff's issues, finally addressed.

The views and opinions given here are exactly that, opinions.  The views of one writer may not be the views of another writer.  Most of us are hypocrites for writing what we do.  We aren't a bunch of religious junkies trying to right the world nor do we think anyone will truely listen.  We would really love if people listened to us, but history has shown that's it's almost impossible to get through to the people who should be listening the most.  We write what we do because we were in these people's shoes once.  Through many stumbles in life we have learned what is truely important and we hope other's follow our example and change themselves for the better.  Some of the members of The North Side Times staff have attempted suicide, drank underage, experimented with drugs, had pregnancy scares, committed violence against others and have been all around disrepectful.  We know that the negative consequences are never dwelled on and that as teenagers, we think we're invincable.  As a society, we do whatever is pleasurable, what Freud called the "Id complex".  That is why we're here, to show why certain things are just plain stupid and shouldn't be done, why certain issues should be resolved and show why certain people should just grow up.  To many people's dismay, we're going to deliver these articles bluntly and not sugarcoat the truth.  We don't wish to fight anyone, we simply want change.  So sit back, buckle up and enjoy the ride, welcome to The North Side Times.
