Molokai, a thirty-eight-mile long island running east-west just nine miles west of Maui, 22 miles east of Oahu and nine miles north of Lanai, is a quiet and charming major island in the Hawaiian chain. With the exception of Niihau, Molokai is considered the most Hawaiian of all the ajor islands. Kaunakakai, the principal city and port, is located on the south central shore of the island. Kalaupapa, located on a low-lying peninsula jutting due north from the cliffed north coast of Molokai (locally called the pali with some of the world's highest 2,000' seacliffs) is the site of Fr. Damiens leprosy settlement which is now a national historical park.
