Hilo, located on the east side of the big island of Hawaii, is situated on a large bay that, although somewhat protected by a large breakwater, is open to the sea with its storms and recurring tsunamis. It is blessed with well over one hundred and twenty-five inches of rain annually and reflects this well-watered environment with its waterfalls and lush vegetation. It is the gateway to the natural wonders of Volcanoes National Park some thirty miles to the south.
