Haines, a small port on the Lynn Canal near Skagway, is the gateway to the Chilkat highway direct connection to southern Alaska which is sometimes referred to as the Haines Cutoff to the Alaskan Highway. It is noted for the annual congregation of bald eagles in the Chilkat region. It can be easily reached by light plane from Skagway, ten miles away, for a day's trip.
