Glacier Bay, located north of Sitka and west of Juneau at the southernmost part of the Alaskan mainland, has become a cruise passenger's favorite as eight tidewater glaciers are readily viewed by ship within the bay. Additional tidewater glaciers are located to the west on the shores of the Gulf of Alaska. Glaciers tend to be retreating worldwide but those in the northwest part of the bay are advancing with some as much as five feet per year.
