Galveston, located on an island at the confluence of Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, is a predominantly commercial port heavily involved in the transshipment of locally derived and processed petroleum products. Because of its proximity to extensive beaches, it has become a large tourist center especially for the huge Houston region situated 50 miles to the northwest. The port is also the gateway to the Houston Ship Channel that extends well beyond Houston.
