R' SHMUEL YEHUDA KATZENELLENBOGEN - He was an ancestor of the Noda B'Yehuda, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau. Shmuel was born in 1521, Padua, Italy. He died March 25, 1597 in Venice, Italy. He was the son of R' Meir Katzenellenbogen (MaHaRaM of Padua) and Hannah. His son was was famous for having been KING for one day in Poland. R' Shmuel was the great great-grandfather of Abraham Yehoshua Heschel of Cracow, and ancestor to the Noda B'Yehuda Rabbi Yechezkel Landau of Prague. His wife was Abigayel (B. approx. 1525-D. 1594 Venice, Italy). R' Shmuel's grandson was the MaHaRaSH, Rabbi Meir Wahl Katzenellenbogen. HERE IS A SYNOPSIS OF HIS LIFE: Upon his father's death, he was elected rabbi in Venice. One of his students had made a bust of him and placed it in the yeshiva. R. Shmuel was respected by R. Joseph Caro, R. Solomon Luria, and R. Moses Isserles. When the Prince of Poland, Prince Radziwill found himself in need of money during a trip through Padua, R. Shmuel lent him the necessary funds for continuing his journey. This debt was repaid when an urgent need to fill the position of king of Poland for one night during elections. *AN INTERESTING NOTE: One day during the summer of 2000, a Rabbinical leader in the United States was at a ground breaking ceremony for a yeshiva to be built in New York. He opened a very old and rare siddur. This siddur once belonged to R' Shaul Wahl Katzenellenbogen. R' SHAUL WAHL KATZENELLENBOGEN - He was an ancestor of the Noda B'Yehuda, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau. Shaul was born in 1545, Ellenbogen, Germany. Here is a synopsis of the history records regarding Saul Katzenellenbogen: He was famous for having been king for one day in Poland. There was a need to find someone trustworthy to serve as king for one day until elections. Shaul Katzenellenbogen was chosen. Therefore, the family name would now have the added surname of Wahl (Wohl). The word "wahl" translates into the word "election". Shaul was a leader of the Jewish community in Brest Litovsk. He wrote several responsa, which are included in the responsa collection of R. Moses Isserles (Nos. 23, 126, 127, 129) and in that of R. Samuel Kala'i. He also contributed some of the notes to the annotated edition of Maimonides' Yad ha-Hazakah (Venice, 1550).
He was the great-grandfather of Abraham Yehoshua Heschel of Cracow, and the ancestor of the Noda B'Yehuda Rabbi Yechezkel Landau of Prague. His parents were R' Shmuel Judah Katzenellenbogen and Abigail. His son was the MaHaRaSH, Rabbi Meir Wahl Katzenellenbogen. Shaul died in 1617, Brest Litovsk.
