California Inter Pocula

by Hubert Howe Bancroft

The chapter "Some Indian Episodes" contains a lengthy account of the Modoc War that is clearly closely related to the earlier account in Bancroft's History of Oregon. See below.

History of Oregon

by Hubert Howe Bancroft

Bancroft has left us two versions of his account of the Modoc War, one in this volume and the other in California Inter Pocula. The excuse he gives for presenting a second version is that "the subject is worthy of more extended treatment than I was able then to give it." But the second version, though wordier, is not really a more extended treatment; it is simply a variant version of the account already given in the History of Oregon. The accounts differ in viewpoint--the first is more sympathetic to the military and less sympathetic to the settlers than the second, for example. Interestingly, these differences are similar to certain well-known disagreements between Bancroft and his chief researcher, Frances Fuller Victor. A close study of the two texts at least suggests that **more**

Life of Alfred B. Meacham

by T. A. Bland

Alfred B. Meacham deserves better than this thirty page pamphlet by his disciple and successor, T. A. Bland. Resembling a character out of the pages of Twain or Dickens, Meacham was a man of contradictions. A politician, a reformer, a huckster, a showman, a tireless worker for minority rights--the man had many sides, none of which come through in this brief sketch. Bland gives the most basic information about Meacham's life, and then pads out his pamphlet with tributes from various sources. It's better than nothing--but not much more.

Wi-Ne-Ma (the Woman-Chief) and Her People

by A. B. Meacham

This little book is hard to classify. Hovering uneasily somewhere between fact and fiction, resembling by turns a biography, a political tract, an ethnological study, or a plea for the rights of the downtrodden, the book is loosely based on the life of Toby Riddle, one of the interpreters at the Modoc War peace conferences, and at the trial of Captain Jack and others. Meacham was well acquainted with both Toby Riddle and her husband Frank, and so in a good position to learn about her life, and yet-- The book is hard to evaluate. Meacham often seems more intent on telling a good story, or making a point, than in necessarily sticking close to what happened. When this volume is the only source of information on an event, as it often is, it should probably be used with caution. And a considerable allowance of salt.

Captain Jack, Modoc Renegade

by Doris Palmer Payne

This 1938 biography of Captain Jack is not bad, as far as it goes. Heavily indebted to Riddle's and Meacham's books, it reproduces pages of dialog from The Indian History of the Modoc War and Wigwam and War Path virtually verbatim. She didn't exactly break any new ground, but she did a nice job in synthesizing the material already available **more**
