When Mick Foley joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1996, he had a conversation backstage with then-champion Shawn Michaels.
Michaels, looking at Mick's scars and bruises, asked Foley if that is how he imagined his wrestling career. Foley said no, that he always imagined he would be like Michaels.
Michaels then said, "You mean being the WWF Champ?"
Foley said no. He said he imagined girls fawning all over him, and that he would be a sex symbol.
This is the idea behind the Dude Love. It started when a teen-age Mick Foley, still insecure around women, wanted to be someone who ladies flocked to. He wrote a wrestling movie called "The Loved One" which starred himself as Dude Love, a heroic chick magnet who ultimately won the World Wrestling Federation Championship.
Not fitting the traditional mold for a chick magnet, however, Mick began his career as Cactus Jack, and eventually became Mankind in the World Wrestling Federation. But he always dreamed of competing as Dude Love -- dreams which were made public in an interview with Jim Ross in early 1997. The seeds had been planted.
On July 14, 1997, Steve Austin and a partner of his choice were set to take on Owen Hart and the British Bulldog in a battle for the vacant Tag Team Championship. Austin had said for weeks that he didn't want a partner, and he especially didn't want Mankind, who had been lobbying for Austin for weeks to "pick me Steve." But midway through the match, Dude Love appeared on the Titan Tron. He said he couldn't blame "Steve-o" for not teaming up with that "mutilated freak Mankind but you never said nothin' 'bout teamin' up with the hippest cat in the land. Steve-o, baby, it's me, Dude Love, and I'm coming to save the day. Owww! Have Mercy!" After the Dudester boogied his way to the ring, the Rattlesnake dropped Davey Boy with a Stone Cold Stunner, and Dude Love was a champion in his first match!
The duo had to forfeit their tag titles due to an injury to Austin, but Dude stayed around in one form or another. In fact, you never knew which of Mick Foley's personas would be wrestling -- the loveable Mankind, the maniacal Cactus Jack or the hunky Dude Love!
Late in 1997, Dude Love faded away, but he ominously re-appeared early in 1998, when Mr. McMahon needed a challenger for Stone Cold Steve Austin's World Wrestling Federation Championship. Much to the shock of Federation fans everywhere, Dude was happy to become McMahon's corporate champion.
Twice Dude Love faced Austin for the WWF Title at Pay-Per-View events. And twice, Austin was able to keep his championship. After his second failure, McMahon threw Dude by the wayside. Mick Foley grew angry and returned to his Mankind persona.
Dude Love has been absent from the Federation since then. But he still remains a treasured memory. He is a constant threat to Federation men, and a constant heartthrob for women everywhere. |
