history of italy
Lying as it does between Europe and Africa, Sicily of the ancient world’, that has not been touched, changed and marked by any cultures. At the start their where Greeks and the Romans, then the Arabs and Normans, and finally, the French, Spanish and Italians, all of them contributing to an unparalleled historical legacy. Under the Romans Sicily may have been perches, but Sicily’s resources were depleted. Forests were destroyed for shipbuilding so they could get around by boat on the water and animals where killed for their meat.
poor joe
For much of his teenage life, Joe was addicted to drugs and alcohol. Joe, now 19, is a recovered addict who counsels other teens. He knows, he says, that he can't stop someone from using drugs or alcohol, but he hopes his own story can "sort of nudge them into a different direction and explain there's a different way of life." Nobody in his peer group did that for Joe, he says; things might have been different if someone had.
fish hotspots
There's a heap of whiting around for boat fishermen when the weather permits, mostly in 20 to 30m of water between the offshore reefs and Rottnest. King george have been picking up in the reports, amongst millions of sandies. The KGs have been caught to nearly a kilo out on the broken ground offshore from Swanbourne. Jewfish have been well spread, but most interesting was the news of several fish being taken inside the Three-Mile Reef off Ocean Reef. Snapper and breaksea cod have been the significant majority amongst all the catches on offshore charter boats last week. There were also plenty of good skippy to a kilo, coming out of 70m of water north of Hillarys. Mulloway are around with the skippy, but the skippy are voracious and usually beat other fish to the baits. There has been a couple of reports of Yellowfin Tuna, appearing erratically off Two Rocks and Ocean Reef, with some being taken by anchoring and berleying and others picked up on the troll. It’s worth having a high-speed skirted lure out the back at the moment, provided there isn’t a lot of weed around. Tailor have been cooperative for shore anglers fishing around Yanchep Lagoon and Two Rocks, with some big fish being taken. Poppers and mulies have been the most common success story, but the best of the fish always seem to be on poppers. A school of salmon has taken up residence in Warnbro Sound, and they’re not babies. A local reports them to be typical autumn-sized specimens well out of season, at around four kilos. A very large salmon was caught from Scarborough Beach too, at around a metre long. The Trigg to Brighton Road stretch is a chance for salmon at any time of year, and has also produced worthwhile numbers of Mulloway in previous springs. Squid have been plentiful in Cockburn Sound, around the ammo dump and off Woodmans Point, and just out from Hillarys Boat Harbour.
