One day the green bird was feeling rather lonely because her friend, the blue bird, had been gone for so long. He said he'd come back as soon as he could, so the green bird concluded that the blue bird must be really busy.
So the green bird stayed pirched in their tree and awaited the blue bird's arrival. But the days turned to weeks, then months, and soon a year had come upon her and she hadn't even heard a simple song-message from her blue bird.
"What could be keeping him so busy?" She'd ask each morning as she'd stare out toward the rising sun, hoping to see his beautiful blue feathers coming her way.
Each day that passed, the green bird's heart sunk lower in her chest. She would chirp for him but no answer ever came. At first, she tried to keep strong wings and clean feathers, and make sure she had plenty of good food for the blue bird when he'd get back. But now she had given up. She didn't care if her wings were weak, or if her green feathers were fading. She soon became angry and began singing sad songs into the night.
Years later the green bird was passing by downtown Oak Tree and spotted a very handsome blue bird that she recognized very well. The blue bird seemed to recognize her too and they began chirping. Before long they were engaged in a deep conversation about their past memories from years and years before. The blue bird said he was sorry for leaving the green bird and never returning her chirps and he wanted a chance to try again. But the green bird shook her beak as she told the blue bird that he was too late. She had moved on and found someone new, and she wasn't going to betray this new red bird for a bird who had treated her so cruely. The blue bird understood and left once again.
The green bird did not watch the blue bird leave, but went looking for her red bird who had a song ready for her. But when she heard it, the green bird began crying, because she knew it was the blue bird she loved, not the red bird. God had created the green bird for the blue bird, but she was so heartbroken that she couldn't take the blue bird back. And before she ever gathered enough strength to say goodbye to the red bird and find her true mate for life, a kid, a human, threw a rock at the green bird's head and knocked her to the ground where she died.
And the blue bird hasn't been heard from since. |
