Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of the Federation of Malaysia, is a vibrant metropolis of some one and a half million inhabitants comprised of Chinese, Malaysians and Indians. With its beginnings as a tin mining settlement a little over one hundred years ago, it has matured into a world-class modern city.
A cruise passenger, landing at Port Klang, can easily spend eight hours visiting the area's highlights from the Batu Cave on the north to the Blue Mosque (Shah Alam) in the south. The view from the observation platform (840') of the Menara Tower (1,283'), which is near the Petronas Twin Towers (world's tallest buildings at 1,483'), is not to be missed as Kuala Lumpur is a green and pretty city with a nice mixture of old and very modern. Its low hills and curvilinear parkways are attractive although it does string the city out somewhat.
KL, as it is locally known, leads the country's fast paced development in almost every category including tourism. The city's economic climate has made it a popular venue for international events and conventions.
Getting to KL is facilitated with over forty international airlines serving the city's state-of-the-art airfield (KUL) at Sepang one hour by road to the southwest. By sea, Port Klang has a new cruise terminal some 25 miles to the southwest near the Strait of Malacca. In addition, good rail and road connections to Bangkok and Singapore ensure KL a strategic central location on the Malay Peninsula.
KL offers museum lovers and also connoisseurs of Southeast Asia's arts and crafts many opportunites to indulge their time. The city's varied architecture has attracted a lot of international attention. Shopping is excellent and, of course, southeast Asian food is an attraction in itself. A buffet in one of the larger restautants is the preferred way to try all the exotic dishes.
The gentle people of southeast Asia round out the attractions of the area. Their helpful disposition smoothes many traveler's little problems and provides a human touch to every aspect of the urban scene.
