Knitting Needles
Needles can be made of wood, plastic, or aluminum. The three most common types are the standard needle with a stopper at one end and a point at the other end, the double-pointed needle, which is pointed at both ends, and the circular needle which has a point at each end and a flexible cord between. Sizes range from 2 (smallest) to 13 (largest). Use standard needles for flat knitting, but use double-pointed needles and circular needles for seamless knitting, i.e. knitting in rounds.

Choosing Yarns
Yarns and threads are made from natural fibres, synthetics and blends. When spun into different thicknesses or subjected to special treatments, yarns acquire their own weight - sock or baby yarns, sport yarns, worsted yarns, and bulky yarns. Before purchasing yarn, determine the project you plan to make so you buy yarn with the fiber content, care requirements, weight, and texture appropriate for that project. Always purchase enough yarn to complete the project. Check the labels when you buy yarn to ensure all of it comes from the same dye lot.

Substituting Yarns
Substituting yarns is OK if the gauge remains the same. If you want your project to look like the project pictured, select a yarn similar in weight and texture to the one suggested.
