Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine to Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. His parents seperated when he was a toddler and he and his older brother, David, were raised by their mother. They moved around but when Stephen was eleven, moved back to Durham for good. He attended grammer school in Durham and later graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966. During his sophomore year at the University in Maine he wrote a weekly column for the school paper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was active in the student politics as member of the Student Senate. He supported the anti-war movement, because he thought that the war was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach at high school level. Stephen made his first short story sale, titled "The Glass Floor", to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. In 1961 he started teaching high school english classes at Hampden Academy. In 1973 Carrie was accepted for publication, and actually published in '74. Next Stephen wrote his next novel, originally Second Coming, then Jerusalem's Lot, before finally settling on 'Salem's Lot. During this his mother died at the age of 59 of cancer. Stephen and his wife Tabitha now spend their summers in Florida and the rest of the year at their homes in Bangor and Lovell. The Kings have three children: Owen Phillip, Joe Hill, and Naomi Rachel. They also have three grandchildren. Steve is of Scot-Irish ancestry, is 6'4", and weighs about 200 pounds. He has blue eyes, fair skin and thick black hair with streaks of white. Since he was a kid he has worn glasses. Stephen and Tabitha provide scholarships for local high school students and contribute to many other charities. Stephen King is the current recipient of the 2003 The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
