SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN WATERS
SILVERWOOD: Very good early morning action for largemouth bass, especially in Cleghorn Canyon. Fish to 7-0 reported this week on nightcrawlers, plastics, and reaction baits. Some striper action during late afternoons and evenings in the rock quarry and at the dam on fish from 15-0 to 34-0, mostly on topwater lures. Crappie, trout slow, but some catfish are showing at night at the dam. Lake elevation as of Monday was 3,352.91, the same as last last week. Full Pool elevation is 3,353. HESPERIA LAKE: Excellent catfish action after a 2,000 pound plant last week. The marshmallow and mealworm combo has been the best bait, while the thumb, Sandy Point, and Gilligan's Island are the top spots. Jeff Bednard, Hinkley, caught a 10-13 cat. Peng Hy, Victorville, caught a 10-10 cat. Mark Crase, Hesperia, caught a 10-5 cat. PRADO: Catfish are planted each Thursday and good action. Weaver Grove and the back side across from the snack bar have been hot spots. The M&M (marshmallow and meal worm) combo has been best, but mackerel, shrimp, chicken liver and nightcrawlers are also good, especially when doused with Hog Wild or garlic oil. MOUNT BALDY TROUT POOLS: This past week there were 220 anglers who caught 480 trout to 19 inches. The heavily stocked pools are now being planted with steelhead and are open every Saturday and Sunday. No fishing license is needed. For information, call (909) 982-4246.

PERRIS: Fair to good bluegill action around the dam, east end, and Rock Climber's Cove during early mornings and evenings, mostly on crickets. Fair bass fishing around the island, Rock Climber Cove, and any rocky points in the morning. Bass are best on crawdads, plastics, and live bait. A few catfish showing at night on mackerel and stinkbaits. Lake elevation as of Monday was 1,582.48, down .03 feet from last week. Full Pool elevation is 1,588. FISHERMAN'S RETREAT: Catfish plant slated for Thursday with a Saturday derby from noon to midnight. Good action on cats, bass and bluegill, even some crappie. Amos Henry, Perris, landed a 5-8 cat. Best action on mackerel dipped in a scent. Bass best on plastics, while bluegill are good on meal worms. No state fishing license is required here and the lake is open 24 hours a day. LAKE ELSINORE: The carp bite is good on dough baits with fish from 2-0 to 2-8 showing all over the lake. Also a fair to goof evening catfish bite with fish from 1-8 to 2-0 with some to 8-0, mostly on mackerel, nightcrawlers and shrimp. Bass and crappie action has been slow. CORONA LAKE: The catfish action has been good with the best action at night. Top fish this week, after a plant of trophy cats in addition to the weekly plants of 1 1/2 to 3-pounders, was a nice 10 1/2-pound channel caught by Dale Gross, San Marcos. Bill Jones, Los Angeles, caught a 10-4 to top off his three-fish 16-pound stringer. Bob Lutz, Corona, had a 30-pound stringer that included eight cats to 9-12. Top baits have continued to be regular cut mackerel doused with a prepared "dip" bait like Hog Wild or prepared mackerel like DuMong's, but some fish also are showing on the meal worm-marshmallow (M&M) combo and regular nightcrawlers. Trophy cats, most from eight to 10 pounds with some bigger, will be planted again this week in addition to the regular plants. SKINNER: Largemouth action picked up this week with good fishing at the south shore for anglers using plastic worms, jerk baits, and nightcrawlers. Daniel Borncama, Riverside, caught a 6-8 bass on a jerk bait at the south shore. Small stripers are showing at inlet on chicken liver and anchovies. Catfish action is also picking up at the dam and at the north shore. Jean Montero, San Jacinto, caught a 12-0 cat on a nightcrawler at the north shore. The panfish bite has been slow. REFLECTION LAKE: Good catfish action during early morning hours with nightcrawlers doing best. Catfish are stocked every other week. Fair bullhead and bluegill action has been reported. JEANS CHANNEL CATS: Continued excellent fishing with another plant this week. Clarence Ellis, Riverside, and Shaun Galloway, Wildomar, teamed up with nightcrawlers caught nine fish for 19 pounds in 19 minutes. STEVE'S FISHING POND: Good catfish action at the west side of the pond during early mornings on fish from 2-0 to 3-0 on Hog Wild and red worms. Carp are biting on the east side at night on chicken liver. Bluegill action good along most shorelines. David Sanchez, Corona, caught five catfish weighing 12-0 total. ORANGE COUNTY
SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: A plant of trophy catfish led to some excellent catches this past week, with five cats over 10 pounds reported along with a lot of six to nine pounders. The best channel cat was a 15.12-pounder landed by Charles Vang, Santa Ana. An 11.8-pounder was caught by James Williams, Los Angeles, while an 11-even was landed by Jim Troska, Costa Mesa. More trophy cats are slated to be planted again this week, along with the three-times a week plants of the 1-8 to 3-0 fish. One group of four anglers -- Mike Tucker, Tony Tucker, Rich Miller, all Huntington Beach, and Jimmy Smelt, Garden Grove -- each had 15-fish and the 60 cats weighed a total of 133.7 pounds. Top baits and bait combos have been the M&M duo (marshmallows and meal worms together), DuMongs catfish bait, and shrimp. IRVINE LAKE: Good catfish action with a lot of limits of 2-0 to 3-0 cats, and a 2,000-pound plant went in this week. Robert Parrott, Garden Grove, landed a 25-pound cat. A few trout are showing in deep water at the dam. The catch-and-release bass action has continued very good on big plastics with a lot of 2-0 to 4-0 class fishing. Bluegill and crappie are slow. LOS ANGELES AREA LAKE
CACHUMA: The trout bite remains very good near the dam, especially in the morning, on rainbow Power Bait and nightcrawlers. The trout are averaging approximately 1-0 to 1-8. Bass are good early mornings on topwater in the flats with a lot of nice fish from 2-8 to 3-0. Poor catfish action. The crappie and perch remain fair. Ray Munoz, Santa Barbara, caught a 3-0 trout on Power Bait in the Mohawk area. Tommy Charlton, 6, Ventura, landed a 4-0 bass using a spinnerbait in Clark Canyon. CASITAS: Good bass action early mornings along the east shoreline. Best bass bite using nightcrawlers and worms. Bass averaging about 2-0 to 5-0. The trout bite remains good near the dam and waters 20-25 feet deep. Anglers have reported catching 1-0 to 3-0 trout. Very few catfish. Fair perch action, not consistent. CASTAIC: Very good largemouth action continues. Many fish are shallow and are biting on live shad, nightcrawlers, Bass Assassins, and plastic worms. Dave Lombardoz, Valencia, caught a triple limit with fish to 6.4 pounds on live shad and a Bass Assassin. Chris Mulligan, Woodland Hills, caught a double limit of bass to 5-0. Stripers have been slow, but Hugh Smith, Valencia, landed a 16-0 on a nightcrawler at the west ramp. Don Grant, Pasadena, caught an 11.7-pound catfish on anchovies while fishing for stripers. PIRU: Good trout fishing with fish to 7-0 reported. The best action for trout has been on Needlefish, firetiger Rapalas, Roostertails, Kastmasters and Power Bait. James Morehouse, La Cresenta, caught three trout totaling 12-8. Good bass bite are biting on nightcrawlers, crawdads, and crankbaits. PYRAMID: Good action on bass to 2-0 for anglers fishing small plastics. Catfish fair to good with some to 10-0 showing around the marina on anchovies or nightcrawlers. Stripers fair with the fish in the 6-0 to 8-0 range caught by anglers fishing anchovies or trolling near the freeway rocks and Brazos.
