If you are planning to start hunting, then this page is an ideal information source for you, even if you already do hunt! This web page is based on hunting with a 22. air rifle although a 177. can be used aswell but does not have the same power.
Selecting my rifle:
What rifle you will be hunting with depends on what kind of quarry (animal) you are hunting. For rat's, and small birds, i would advise a 177. but if you seek larger quarry such as squirals and rabbits and larger birds, then a 22. is a must as it has the power to make a clean kill on such pests.
Tip:THE LARGEST QUARRY YOU CAN HUNT WITH AN AIR RIFLE IS A RABBIT! NEVER TRY TO KILL ANYTHING LARGER AS THE ANIMAL BE LEFT IN PAIN AND IT WOULD BE INHUMMANE!
Selecting pellets:
When i go hunting i use dome shape pellets, similar to the RWS superdome but all the lead is at the front of the pellet to make more impact. Needle point pellets can be used on rats but are usually used to injure rather than kill as they have a smaller surface area. Always try and go for a clean kill, even with rats as even they fell pain!
Vermin list:
Rabbits:
Rabbits are a tricky pest to pass over as they have great hearing and eyesite. To do over these tasty pests, you need to get close to them for a clean kill as most rifles only have a 12ftlb of pressure. You need to be within 25yrds unless you have a good shot and a powerfull rifle. You need to be very quiet as alot of noise tends to make cottontails bolt. The kill zone for a clean kill is down from the ear and just behind the eye. Camoflauge clothing is a must for rabbit hunting. Lamping is also a good way for rabbit hunting as the light reflects off the rabbits eyes and causes them to freeze, but make sure it is a rabbit you are shooting as light reflects off of other animals eyes to! Other vermin such as rats may be attracted to the light to so be carefull.
Rats:
Rats have known to jump at people and run up there trouser legs, sleeves and gun barrels. Never pick up any rat as they carry a disease called weils disease (the yellows) and the disease can kill you in under two weeks. Never corner a rat or they will jump at you and always go for a clean kill. If you intend on hunting rats you have to be very patient and laying out bait may even be a good idea. Lay out stale bread and apples where you expect them to be. Rats have excellent hearing, smell and taste but have poor eyesite so go for a clean kill.
