YOUNG SCOTTISH STARS

The youth production line at Easter Road has never been more in focus than recent years, and Scott Brown is yet another example of just why that is so. The natural skills shown by Scott seemed to increase with every first-team appearance, former manager Bobby Williamson admitting that he was surprised by the impact that the player had on the first team. Scott can score with either foot but it is in creating openings from nothing that his true talent has come to the fore, with his trickery and uncompromising attitude rarely to the liking of his opponents! An injury early last season did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm but did restrict Scott to 24 appearances and just two goals.
KEVIN THOMSON
A superb start to his first-team career was brought to an abrupt end in 2003/04 when Kevin suffered a serious injury that kept him on the sidelines for almost a year. Tony Mowbray had however heard enough about his young star to know that he would at some point prove a valuable asset once again, and Kevin duly returned to the first team towards the end of last season, making 4 appearances. With a full pre-season behind him however he will be very much looking forward to the new campaign.
DEREK RIORDAN
After making fleeting appearances in the first team under Franck Sauzee, Derek made the breakthrough at the end of the 2002/03 season. He then underlined his claims as one of the most exciting young talents in the Scottish game during the following campaign, when only injury halted him reaching 20 goals for the season - that all the more remarkable as he played most of the 2003/04 campaign in wide midfield positions! Missed the start of the 2004/05 campaign through that injury but made up for lost time quickly establishing himself in Tony Mowbray’s side, making 43 league appearances and scoring 23 goals to end the season as top scorer. Called up to the Scotland squad at the end of last season, a fine career looks assured for Derek, who struck his 50th goal for Hibernian in October 2005.

SCOTT BROWN
Born on 18 March 1983 in Irvinek Kris Boyd is a Scottish professional footballer currently playing for Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. Boyd started his career with Kilmarnock and made his debut for the club when came on the last day of the 2000/2001 against Celtic. The departures of Ally McCoist and Christopher Cocard gave Boyd a chance to stake a place in the team. In 2001/2002 he hit 5 goals. 2002/2003 saw him hit 12 goals and pick up the Kilmarnock Young Player of the Year award. He was also a regular in the Scotland Under-21 team. 2003/2004 was even better for Boyd who hit 15 goals. He even spent a trial with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of the campaign. The move never happened but gave Boyd a taste of the big time. Goals kept coming for Boyd in 2004/2005 and he almost set a record for himself when scored all 5 of Kilmarnocks goals against Dundee United in September 2004 which saw Kilmarnock win 5-2. He did actually score 6 goals but one was harshly ruled out for an infringement. He managed to equal the record of number of goals scored in a single match set by Kenny Miller who managed 5 against St Mirren for Rangers in 2001. 2005/2006 has seen Boyd in blistering form for Kilmarnock, which attracted interest from English Championship side Cardiff City, however despite a £500,000 offer, Boyd rejected the move. On 22 December 2005 it was announced that Boyd would sign for Rangers in the January transfer window. Boyd officially joined Rangers on 1 January 2006. In an unprecedented move he waved half of his £40,000 signing on fee, that Kilmarnock were due to pay him under his contract to help fund the youth set up which benefited his career at Kilmarnock. He made his Rangers debut on January 7 2006 against Peterhead in the Scottish Cup third round, in which he scored a hat-trick - sealing a 5-0 win. It is now widely expected that he will shortly obtain his first full Scotland cap.
