This is also really cool. Hudson was born in England, and sailed for the Dutch. The ship he used on his third voyage, the Half Moon, in Dutch is the Halve Maen. Find out how to say something else in a different language!

He was a famous English navigator who sailed for the Dutch. He has a strait, bay, and river
named after him. Who was this famous explorer? He was Henry Hudson. Before 1607, his life
was not known, so when he was born, we do not know. He sailed from 1607-1611 in search of
a Northwest passage to Asia. Imagine the courage it must have took to do what he did!

His first voyage was on the Hopewell. Trying to find a northwest passage to Asia, he touched the shores of Greenland. He was unsuccesful, but did get as far as 80 degrees west.

On his second voyage, Hudson once again tried to find a passage to Asia. He was sure he would be able to find a passage this time. He was not successful, and when he got back to Holland, the Muscovy Company withdrew their support. Hudson turned to the East India Company for a new ship and funding.

Aboard the Halve Maen (Half Moon), Hudson and his mixed Dutch and English crew of about 18 or 20 men sailed west. They explored the Atlantic Coast for a while, and then went in to the continent of North America. Hudson explored a bay near New York, and then moved north and explored what is now Hudson Bay. He found Hudson River and followed that for a while, but no passage was found. On their way back, the crew of the Half Moon stopped at the islands of Novaya Zemlya. When he returned to England, Hudson and his ship were captured by the federal government there. He was told to only sail for the country of his birth from then on. Hudson returned to Half Moon to the Dutch East India Company, and recieved the Discovery from England.
On his fourth and final voyage in 1610, Hudson was more than determined to find a passage to Asia! He sailed westward with his new crew mate, his son John, by way of Novaya Zemlya in the Berants Sea. Near the Canadian border, the crew found a strait. Could it be the passage to Asia? They sailed forward with hope in their hearts, and found out the answer to their question was . . .

NO! CTR It was winter, and some men in the crew were sick, and some had died. Most of the crew were angry that Hudson had decided to stay the winter in a bay off the coast of the present day United States of America. They mutinied, or revolted, and sent Hudson, his son, four sick men, and three men loyal to Hudson, adrift in a small boat. The mutinious crew was attacked by Iniut while trying to get back to England, and the few that got there were imprisoned for mutiny, but Hudson and the others were never seen again.
