The Formative Years
Huddersfield Town was formed on June 26th 1908
at the Albert Hotel, combining the existing Leeds
Road Company, owners of the Leeds Road ground, and
a new limited company "The Huddersfield Town
Association Football Club Ltd".
The company was then registered on August 15th
the birth of the club was complete.
The people involved in the Leeds Road company
had allready gained admitance for the as of then
unnamed Town side into the North Eastern League.
Leeds Road facilities were at that time basic,
with dressing rooms alternating between a local
hotel,rented property, and a tramcar,until the
November when a permanent building was finished.
A small roofless stand was erected on the Leeds
Road side to give it a football ground feel.
Huddersfield Town s first match at Leeds Road
was on September 8th v Bradford Park Avenue, who
were newly elected into Division Two of the
Football League, and on a gloomy evening of 30
minutes each way Bradford lead at half time.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, and the
Town scored their first goal, abeit it an own
goal from Freeborough.Minutes later however
R.Dicky Morris their Welsh international put
Huddersfield 2-1 up,and became the first goal
scorer for the Town. The team that day:
Grinson,Ray,Trenham,Hartley,Walker,Hooton,R.
Morris,Flowitt,Cookson,Shackleton,J.Morris the
attendance was about 1600,and Town wore white
shirts, and black shorts.
On September 5th the Town began competative
football loosing at South Shields, and it wasn't
until Saturday November 28th when Darlington
were beaten, that Huddersfield won their first
match.Further wins were to follow for the Scarlet
Runners, known as such as they dressed in red.
After this first season, the meeting on July 26th
to formulate policies decreed that Huddersfield
Town FC would play in "blue jerseys, and white
knickers" whilst mentions were made of the April
19th meeting in Birmingham at which a number of
ambitious clubs made an abortive attempt to start
a Third Division.
The 1909-10 season saw Huddersfield Town enter the
Midland League,which reduced travel costs,increased
attendances, and entry into a league which supplied
a number of clubs for the Football League.
Ground facilities improved with turnstiles,fitting
of phone and lighting cables, and perimeter fencing.
Whilst on the pitch the Town held their own,by the
end of the season finishing 5th.
The FA Cup provided a mini run begining with a tie
against rivals Heckmondwyke resulting in an 11-0
win,still a record today,then wins against Mirfield
then Rothwell lead to a match against South Kirkby
Colliery this saw many injuries to players, and
included a broken leg to a Colliery player, the
result being a report sent to the FA.
Huddersfield made a bid to join the Football League
and on June 13th the votes were cast.
Birmingham 30 votes
Huddersfield Town 26 votes
Grimsby Town 17 votes
Darlington 7 votes
Chesterfield 6 votes
Hartleppol Utd,& Rochdale 1 vote each
Huddersfield had gained entry into the Football
League, and the promise of £6000 worth of further
ground improvements began immediately.
The Early League Years
Huddersfield Town FCs first league match took place
at Park Avenue home of Bradford Park Avenue, this
was watched by 16,000 fans who saw Town win 1-0
with a Hamilton goal.At home the first opponents
were Burnley on September 10th,a crowd of 7,371
saw Town resplendent in white shirts, blue & white
shorts, and white socks loose this encounter, and by
the turn of the year, win only 4 out of 18 matches.
The new year however saw an upturn in fortunes,
and a steady climb to mid-table by the seasons
end.
The close season saw the pitch relaid, and mainstand
completed.
The 1911-12 season saw a first match against local
rivals and previous seasons cup winners Barnsley.
The crowd of 12,766 cheered Town to a 2-1 victory,
and once again mid table respectability. It also
saw the back of a temporary financial crisis, and
registration of "Huddersfield Town Association
Football Club" as a company,to take over the
affairs of a simularly titled "Huddesfield Town
Association Football Club".
The 1912-13 season highlight was a ground record
at that time of 17,000 set against Swindon Town
in the FA Cup Town lost this time.
In the following season Huddersfield Town gave
permission for Pathe to film at home matches, which
lead to matches on film for the first time, however
the "Great War" arriving saw players volunteering for
service, as the season drew to a close.
The war years competitions saw Huddersfield Town
have some success but loose players in the conflict.
