HERE IS A FEW THAT WE LIKE TO DO!

Play Dough Hands

Materials Needed

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 Tablespoon cooking oil
1 cup water
powder paint of food colouring
bowl, spoons, rolling pin
wax paper or paper plates
paper clips
ribbons
Directions

This lasting memory makes a great Mother's Day gift.

Mix the powder paint with the flour and salt. (If you are using food colour add it to the water.) Put in the oil and water, kneading well. The dough can be stored in plastic bags in the fridge for a week, though it tends to crumble.

Have each child roll out the dough on a paper plate or piece of wax paper to make a plaque. Press a paper clip into the top of the plaque to provide a hanger. Next let the children press their hand(s) into the play dough, leaving a clear imprint. (You may have to practice a few times with spare dough.) Bake the hands in a 350 F degree oven for 45 minutes to make the plaques hard. Once baked and cooled off, the children can decorate with ribbons, bows etc for an added effect. With a marker write the child's name, age and the date on the front or back of the plaque.

Helping Hand Book

MATERIALS:

Construction Paper
Stapler
Crayons or Markers

1. Trace child's hand onto 5-6 pieces of paper.

2. Staple together to form a book. On the cover write. Helping Hand Coupon book.

3. The kids can color the hands. Kids can also think of specific things they want to help with...pickup trash, rake leaves, rub back...etc....and write these on each page.

Makes nice Mother or Father's day gifts.

Bubbles

If the day is sunny, let the children go outside and blow bubbles. Look at the colors in the bubbles. If indoors, put paint in the bubble solution. Children can make bubbles and then let them burst on the paper to make bubble paintings.

Painting With Feet

warm soapy water.

Directions Mix tempera paint thicker than usual. Cover the bottoms of one or two tubs with paint. Fill a third tub with warm soapy water. Spread out six foot pieces of paper and place paint the paint at one end and the water at the other end.

After removing shoes and socks, let one child at a time step into his or her choices of paint and walk the entire length of the paper, leaving footprints. Then have the child wash his or her feet in the tub if water. (Adapt from 1-2-3 art)

Rain Painting

Materials Needed

paper plate (Chinet or other uncoated plate)
food colouring
white crayon

Directions This activity, makes the most of rainy weather.

After springling a few drops of colouring on a paper plate, your children can put on their rain gear and walk outdoors with the plate for about a minute. For a Batik effect, let the children draw a white crayon design on the plate before adding the food colour.

Materials Needed

old holiday greeting cards
different colours of glitter
contruction paper

blunt scissors
Directions

Let the children choose pictures and objects from their favority holiday cards. Cut out the pictures and have the children brush glue on them. Place the pictures on a piece of wax paper or in a shallow baking pan then get the children to sprinkle the glitter on the pictures. Magic Telescopes

Materials Needed

paper towel tubes
aluminum foil, stick on foil stars
crayons or markers
paper
glue
Directions

Have the children decorate the paper towel tubes with paper pieces of aluminum foil, the foil stars and crayons. When the project is completed have the children look through the telescope and imagine they are looking out at distant stars or planets. Ask them to use their imagination and tell you what they see. For example, "I see a comet. Can you see one? What does a comet look like to you? Has anyone seen a comet in the sky? What else do you think you might see when looking through a telescope?" When they are finished they can draw pictures of what they saw with their telescopes.

Magic Telescopes help children to develop their imaginations and to understand the difference between real and pretend
