| In the most general form: Increasing Light: The period from the new moon to the full moon, which is the period in which the light is increasing, is best for planting annuals which provide their yield above the ground. Decreasing Light: The period from the full moon to the new moon, when the light is decreasing, is best for planting biennials (those plants on a two-year cycle), perennials, and root and bulb crops. Plant potatoes during the dark of the moon" is an old adage. More specifically: During the first quarter, or the time from the new moon to about half- full, plant annuals with above-ground yields, particularly leafy plants which produce their seed outside the fruit. Some examples of first quarter plants are asparagus, cabbage, celery, endive, and spinach. During the second quarter, or the time from the half-full to the full moon, plant annuals that have above-ground yields which are vining and produce seed inside the fruit. Second quarter plants include beans, peas, peppers, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Some plants, such as garlic, melons, hay, and grains and cereals, do well if planted in either the first or second quarter. During the third quarter, from the full moon to half-full, plant biennials, perennials, bulb and root crops, any crops which are planted in one season to winter over and produce yields the following year, trees, and shrubs. Some third quarter plants include onions, potatoes, rhubarb, grapes, winter wheat, and berries. During the fourth quarter, from half-full to new moon, cultivate, pull weeds, destroy pests, and turn sod. It describes in greater detail the concept of gardening by the stars and moon, has lots of practical non-astrological gardening advice, and quite a few recipes. First........ * you need a censer (something to burn the incense in) some people use commercially purchased ones some people use a glass bowl filled half way with sand (i like that one) for the purposes of arguement let's go with the bowl and sand :) My fav i use is an old mortar i got in S Texas carved out of a big rock (Jo) *charcoal blocks (sold in many sizes from over 2 inches down to half an inch) NOTE: don't use charcoal like for the bar-b-que grill....it won't work very well! * a mortal and pestle or an electric grinder (herbs and ingredients MUST be finely ground preferably to a powder - you can also grind stones for additional power in your rituals) SECOND In all the following we are going to assume that you have a small bowl filled with sand on a secure place -no tipping over and no burns! INCENSE PAPERS.... That OTHER Kind of incense you will need : white blotter paper cut into six inch strips about an inch wide 1 1/2 teaspoon potassium nitrate added to one half cup warm water. Stir until completely dissolved........... (you can buy potassium nitrate over the counter at most drug stores) soak the paper strips in the solution until thoroughly WET then hang them up to dry. You now have paper versions of charcoal blocks used the burn incense! NOW when making incense papers - your goal is to overcome the smell of the burning paper - so HEAVY frangrances should be used. TO SCENT YOUR INCENSE PAPERS. Choose a scent for your magical need and add a few drops at a time to the paper and smear over one side of the paper - then hang to dry . When completely dry - store in an airtight container until ready to use :) (if it is not completely dry - you will have a moldy mushy MESS when you open your container) Use only tinctures to scent the papers - essential and base oils just don't do it very well Making tinctures to scent your incense papers with...a tincture is the process of soaking dried plant materials in alcohol which captures the scent. DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL. use only ethyl alcohol or "Everclear" needs to be a minimum of 140 proof (70%) How to do it: You will need a good supply of DRIED plant materials (your choice) Dont' use fresh herbs - they don't work. Grind the dried herbs and reduce to the finest possible powder. Pour the ground herb into a small bottle and then pour in just enough ethyl alcohol to cover the herb. CAP TIGHTLY. Shake the bottle once or twice everyday for a week or two. Then using a coffee filter -strain the alcohol. The scent may be strong enough for you at this point. To Test: add a drop or two to your wrist and wait for the alcohol to evaporate. REMEMBER - many tinctures do not smell "true" in the bottle! IF THE SCENT IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR YOU ... Simply pour the mixture back into the bottle and repeat the shake and wait for another week! THEN when the plants scent has completely overpowered the alcohol smell, filter one last time,bottle, and add a few drops of castor oil or glycerine to stablilize the scent. | Magickal Kitchen Herbs Anise When used in amulets, it is said to protect the wearer against disturbing dreams. Also used in astral travel for protection. Can be used in spell work to aid the person in happiness. Basil Protects against the unknown and when blessed and added to your cleaning water, it basically washes away negativity as you clean your home. Celery Seed A common kitchen herb that is said to be a strong visionary herb. Used as a tea to open the mind and allows better concentration. Dill Used in blessings for the home and kitchen. Fennel Used for the practice of meditation. Ginger Worn in an amulet to strengthen health and protect the wearer. Hop Not necessarily found in the kitchen (unless you count the beer in the fridge) Used in dream pillows to bring restful sleep. Milkweed Definitely not in the kitchen and many will not allow it in their yard, because to many it is a bothersome weed that grows in our yards. However the milky white liquid produced when breaking open the stalk will remove warts. Rosemary When burned as an incense, is said to stimulate memory. Sage Used to banish all evil, in purification, healing and cleansing. Tarragon Used in kitchen magick to calm the guests and make them feel welcome. Thyme When burned as an incense it is used to protect against all dangerous insects and animals. SIMPLE EARTH SPELLPlace your chosen herbs into a clean bag, take it to a wooded or very unused area, someplace it won't be disturbed. Dig a small hole in the earth and pour the herbs into the hole. Visualize your need as strongly and clearly as you can, recite a short incantation you chose then cover the hole and leave it untouched. So mote it be! SIMPLE AIR SPELLGo to a hill or preferably a moulntain, far away as you can from everything. Hold the herbs in your power hand (your writing hand) and facing North blow a little of the herbs to the Northern watchtowers, then repeat to the Easr and South. At the West blow the remaining herbs as far as you can. Visualize your need as strongly and clearly as possible. Recite any cantation you may have chosen. SIMPLE FIRE SPELLWrite a symbol of your need on parchment paper and cut it into a triangle. While visualizing what you want, place the herbs you have selected in the center of the paper, and crumple it tightly, make sure no herbs can escape! Build a fire outside and throw the paper ball into the flames. As it touches the flames visualize you desire, keep visualizing until the paper ball is consumed into the flames, while reciting a chosen cantation. SIMPLE WATER SPELLTake your chosen herbs to a body of water. Hold them in your power hand (writing hand) and visualize your desire, toss the herbs into the water, Recite a cantation if you have chosen one. Healing by the MoonMoon goddesses are also goddess of magic and herbal healing. Isis, Artemis, Hecate, and Diana are just a few of the any lunar deities who were invoked in herbal healing rituals and spells. The very first forms of magic were healing magic. Healers used the energies and properties of the world around them to bring their ailing patients back into a state of health. They observed that all living things responded to the waxing and waning of the Moon. During the Full Moon shellfish are plumper and more succulent, and mammals have more blood in their bodies and stronger heartbeats. Women tend to menstruate during the New Moon and ovulate during the Full Moon. The herbs used by ancient healers were said to be best when picked during a particular phase of the Moon. As a modern herbalist, I have found the Moon to be a powerful healing ally. Unlike my healing predecessors, I am spoiled by a ready supply of prepared herbs. Therefore, I don’t spend a lot of time picking my herbs during the optimal phase of the Moon. However, I have found using herbal therapies in harmony with the phases of the Moon to be a very powerful healing strategy. Waxing Moon The waxing phase of the Moon is the best time to build the body up. This is when I use nurturing herbs and tonics to strengthen the body’s natural immunities. Raspberry leaf is an excellent tonic for female reproductive organs; hawthorn berries are good for the cardiovascular system; nettle is a great blood tonic; marshmallow root is a soothing tonic for the urinary tract; astragalas is a wonderful immune system tonic; burdock is a good liver tonic; red clover builds fertility; oat straw is good for the nervous system; and alfalfa is a fantastic all-around nutritive tonic. These herbs are simple and gentle. They are best taken in a cup of tea, three to five times a day. During the waxing phase, I also like to increase water intake to avoid water retention. The more water we ingest, the less water our bodies attempt to retain. This is also a good time to apply medicinal salves and to take therapeutic baths. Most importantly, I work during the waxing Moon to ensure that the body has all the nutritional support it needs. This is the body’s building time, and it needs a good supply of minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids to be healthy. I would also not attempt to fast or to lose weight during the waxing Moon. Use energy healing techniques to strengthen and reconnect with the earth. Be careful to ground and center when healing so that you never use up your own life force energy. The universe if full of energy to use, and by tapping into it you will be able to help many more people than you could by using just your energy alone. Full Moon The Full Moon lasts about three days. It is a very intense phase. Many women still ovulate with the Full Moon. This is the time when I apply the most powerful herbs. I like to use cayenne capsules to treat infections of any kind. Goldenseal is a well-known herbal antibiotic. Echinacea and Lomatium are anti-viral. Dong quai, blackcohosh and chasteberry are excellent herbs for female hormonal fluctuations. Energy healing work during the Full Moon is very powerful. On the energetic level, it acts like a magnifying mirror. The strong lunar energy pulls everything out of hiding and reflects it back at us. This is often the time during an acute illness when people feel their worst. The Full Moon intensifies whatever else is going on. Often people aren’t even aware that they’re sick until the Full Moon hits. This is also an excellent time for psychological therapy. Emotions seem closer to the surface than usual and social inhibitions melt away. Agendas that have been simmering under the surface tend to come out under the light of the Full Moon. This is a time to strengthen relationships and reaffirm bonds. Never underestimate the healing power of simply holding someone’s hand and listening. This is not the time for isolation or introspection. The Full Moon draws all of life toward it. Even the solid ground rises several inches when the Full Moon passes overhead! Waning Moon The Waning Moon is the best time to employ therapeutic fasts. I avoid drastic fasting. There is usually no need to starve the body to heal it. However, I found it helpful to limit my intake to juices and soups for a few days during the waning Moon, particularly when I was struggling with the flu. I like to use purifying herbs in moderation at this time. Sage, ginger, lemon, thyme, lavender, and peppermint are all cleansing the clearing herbs. The Waning Moon is also a good time to do sweats and diaphoretic (sweat producing) baths. In addition, if I were trying to kick a habit, I would do it during the waning phase. Full body massages help circulation and strengthen the eliminative systems. Use energy healing techniques to server unhealthy bonds and strengthen boundaries. New Moon The New Moon is as powerful in its own way as the Full Moon. It is a time for taking stock. It is a phase of hibernation, retreat, and contemplation. Avoid crowds and gatherings and seek a little time for yourself. Unless an illness is at a critical phase, I frequently cease all therapies for a day or so and allow the body to seek its own level. Rest is crucial during the New Moon. Simple foods and quiet times are powerful healers. Many women menstruate with the New Moon. It is natural to want to curl up in bed with a good book and nice cup of chamomile tea. Stronger nervines (relaxing herbs) are skullcap, hops, catnip, oatstraw and valerian. After the New Moon ends and that first crescent appears, then the healing lunar cycle begins all over again. Most acute diseases do not last a full lunar cycle. The information in this article is only intended to be an educational tool, not a prescription. It is always wise to consult with your health care provider when experiencing any illness or discomfort. Awareness of the rhythms of nature can assist you and your health care provider in determining the best course of treatment at any given time. Naturally, some conditions will require that you apply therapies that don’t necessarily “fit” with the phase of the Moon. However, I have found that my own therapies are much more effective when I am not fighting the tides that flow around and through us.
