Goderich (god'rich) is a small, deep port located at the mouth of the Maitland River on the southeast shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. It is situated 80 miles northeast of Port Huron/Sarnia and 140 miles west of Toronto. It has a salt mine at the north entrance to the harbor that is over 1,700 feet deep and reportedly was the first salt mine in North America. The salt vein reaches to Niagara and the Goderich mine has been described as the biggest underground salt mine in the world. The small city is most pleasant and features many large old structures dating back over 160 years. The center of the town is an octagonal park with eight radiating streets that is call the square! There is a new boardwalk that fronts three small beaches just south of the harbor mouth. An abandoned railroad crossing, the Menesetung Bridge, has been improved to a walking bridge that has great views of the Maitland River. At times, Goderich has been call the prettiest town in Canada.
