Alpena, a small popular outdoor recreation center (sport fishing, boating, wildlife, diving) and port town, is located at the head of Michigan's Thunder Bay which is on the western shore of Lake Huron. The nearby Thunder Bay Underwater Preserve contains the highest number of submerged wrecks in the Great Lakes and has been designated a federal marine sanctuary. In addition, there are a few hundred limestone sinkholes in the Alpena region, some of which may be explored.
