Gary Watkins passed away on April 4, 2000.
Gary Watkins was a very sweet, cute, and kind young man. He was loved by many, many people in this world and no matter how far away he is from us he will never leave our hearts. He will continue to be with us for the remainder of our lives.
Many people would look at Gary as a hero. He saved six lives. A 23-year old woman received Gary's lungs. A 37-year old man received Gary's heart. A 59-year old widowed mother received Gary's liver. Gary's pancreas was transplanted to a 48-year old man, he no longer is required to take insulin now. A 48-year old man received Gary's right kindney, and a 45-year old man received Gary's left kidney. If it hadn't been for Gary some of these people wouldn't be here with us today.
*NEW INFORMATION*
The recipient of Gary's lungs is doing very well and so is his liver recipient. The right kidney recipient is also doing great. The heart recipient is doing fairly well but is having some physical difficulties. Unfortunately.....the left kidney recipient has died. The family said that they are very greatful for the generous act of the donation to thier family member, at least he had been given a second chance to life.
On May 3, 2000, we received a letter stating that Gary's corneas were transplanted too. Now, two people will not go blind and will be able to see because of Gary. =)
No one will ever know why this had to happen to Gary and they don't agree with it. Some people may wonder why he had to leave us all now...why couldn't he have waited? Why couldn't it have been someone else? Why so early in his life? The thing is, we'll never know. The only thing you can do is say to yourself that Gary is in a better place and he did save lives. It can't get any better than that right now. Remember all the good memories about Gary, and think about all the funny things he used to do. Remember how goofy he was and remember how much fun he had while he was here.
There isn't one day that goes by that people don't think about Gary and what happened to him. Sometimes you just wonder about how different it would be here with him. Would we be here doing what we are doing at this moment? Would it be more fun than it is now? Nothing will ever be the same without him again. Things will get easier but then again you have the hard times like Gary's birthday (March 24, 1987), Christmas and other holidays.
After Gary was hit his injuries included a skull fracture, he had a C2 fracture, which is in the neck, he had multiple rib fractures, he had sinus fractures, he had a collapsed lung, he had a kidney fracture, he had a pelvic fracture, he had a lacerated liver, he had hemorrhaging of the brain stem, he had shear force brain injury, and he had abrasions on his face, hands and on his knees.
The family gives thanks to everyone who supported them throughout this whole situation and the recovery period afterward.
IN MEMORY OF A GREAT FRIEND
We still don't understand
Why you had to leave us one day,
Don't understand why God took you away.
We got so use to seeing you in class;
We can't believe how the times flew by so fast.
When we was working,
All we could do is think of you,
Hoping that you would have
The strength to pull through.
We remember the night Heather called us
Like it was yesterday
We were so much in shock we had nothing to say.
She said you had already died.
We went to our rooms, fell on the bed, and cried.
"This can't be happening," is what raced through our head.
How could one of our new friends be dead?
When we went to your funeral,
We thought that we, too, would die.
We went to look upon you,
And all we could do was cry.
It looks as though you had suffered
A great deal.
Hurt and pain was all we could feel.
Now you're in Heaven,
Where you are no longer in pain.
We are just waiting for the day
When we can see you again.
It was great the year we knew you.
We lone and miss you,
Mr. Gary Watkins
An Undone Tragedy
A population of friends,
one less friendship
A population of teachers,
one less student
A broken heart which can't be put together,
A dear, significant other which has left our school forever
With so many unique talents that mystified our people,
With so many good looks that attracted the females,
A skateboarding heart he had,
A ton of loving classmates he had,
Now all was taken away from him,
In an instant and utter blur,
Even though the happened,
Even though this occured,
Gary will live in our hearts, always and forevermore

HEAVEN'S NEWEST ANGEL
A TRIBUTE TO GARY TERRELL WATKINS
THIS POEM WAS READ A GARY'S FUNERAL. IT WAS HARD, BUT SINCE IT CAME STRAIGHT
FROM MY HEART, IT ENDED UP JUST FINE.
HEAVEN HAS A NEW ANGEL.
HE JOINED THEM THE OTHER
DAY. I BELIEVE HE'S RUNNING
AROUND ENJOYING HEAVEN'S
PLAY.
HE DIDN'T REALLY DESERVE
TO DIE, ALTHOUGH HE HAD
TO GO. GOD HAD A PLAN
FOR HIM AND THAT PLAN
WE NOW KNOW.
I LIKE TO THINK OF HIM NOW
AS A GUARDIAN ANGEL IN THE
SKY, WATCHING OVER US AS WE
PRAY, SLEEP, WONDER, AND EVEN
AS WE CRY.
HEAVEN'S NEWEST ANGEL IS
LOVING AND FULL OF CARE.
EVERYTIME YOU NEEDED HIM
HE WAS ALWAYS THERE.
IF HE WERE HERE THIS MOMENT,
HE JUST MIGHT LAUGH AND SAY,
"THE FISH AREN'T BITING HERE
IN HEAVEN, BUT IT SURE IS A
BEAUTIFUL DAY."
HEAVEN'S NEWEST ANGEL LIVES
IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH
BECAUSE HE HAS GIVEN OTHERS
NEW HOPE AND NEW BIRTH.

OH GARY I DO MISS YOU SO!
Oh Gary I do miss you so!
I don't know what I am going to do
without you here.
I will never ever forget you or when you died!
I can't believe you are actually gone.
Now when I go to Heather's, it isn't
going to be the same there. You always
made me smile and laugh.
Oh Gary! Oh Gary! I do miss you so.
I have no clue what I am going to do.
Every night, I ask myself WHY
you and why it couldn't be someone else.
Oh Gary I do miss you so!
After time goes by, I will miss
you more and more. Oh Gary! Oh Gary
I do miss you so!
Bye
Bye
Gary!

Time
The passage of time, forever lost,
Except in memory where time yet lives.
Slipping past in phases and blurs,
Or in moments that go on for eternity.
Carry me back to a time all but forgot,
Where memory is sweet and seductive.
A time when I once held your heart and love.
Times remembrance of a hearts embrace,
When time was simple and life so sure.
The times faced together, both good and bad,
Nothing could surmount a love so true.
Against the world, together we stood,
In our little world we withstood it all.
A time of Love and passion, immune to time.
Oh but the passage of time, the effect it had,
So savage and raw, eroding ever so slowly.
Drifting apart, falling apart at the seams,
The death of love and all of its dreams.
Then reality hits and cannot be denied,
I lost you with the endless passage of time.
Yet still I recall this love, regardless of time!

You and I
Remembrance of times forever lost,
Yet always within they remain.
Forever etched in my heart and soul,
Timeless treasures that I do cherish.
Always to remain a part of who I am.
Chance a smile or perhaps a tear,
I think upon you and me....us.
Words unspoken, yet so clear.
Dreams we shared, forever unbroken.
My heart is forever with you.
Dreams and hopes for tomorrow,
Together today we share.
Who I am and who I will be,
A part of you in me ...forevermore!
We have become one, you and I,
Spirits that bonded, heart and soul. |
