"IJmuiden is the location of the North Sea Locks where the North Sea Canal enters the North Sea. The locks are among the largest in the world and permit ocean-going ships to reach Amsterdam. The 10-mile passage from the North Sea to Amsterdam requires about two and one-half hours depending on the cruise passenger terminal of which there are two: PTA Oostelijke Handelskade in the western suburbs of the city and, for smaller ships, the De Ruyterkade Oost situated within a few blocks of the Central Railroad Station."
