SUPPLING SUNROOM

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD DO THE EXERCISES WITHOUT THE VIBRATING REINS A FEW TIMES AND THEN IF YOUR HORSE ISN'T RESPONDING THEN USE THAT APPROACH.

I own a large thoroughbred who needs to be warmed up really well before he can get supple. He is only nine but he can still get stiff. Here are some great exercises to make them accept the bit, relax and bend.

1) Start off by walking and trotting around the ring in both directions so they can stretch out their muscles. But ask for the bend through all your corners.

2) Start doing a 20 meter circle making sure you keep a bend to the inside. Do this circle in both directions as many times as you like or until you feel them start to give to the bit a small amount.

3) Staying on the circle, start doing an outside bend. This requires a lot of leg because this is harder for the horse.

4) Go around the ring a few times to let their muscles stretch again.

5) Go back on your circle doing the inside and outside bends. However this time vibrate your reins. Not both at the same time 2but one then the other. Keep switching which rein you vibrate every 10-15 seconds. When you vibrate don't pull on your horse's mouth. Simply tighten and loosen you fingers at a quick pace.

6) You can do this exercise at any pace. If your horse gets strong a firm half halt really helps. Also, lots of transitions, serpentines, and bending help your horse to supple.

PATTERN HALL

Here are some patterns you can practice with your horse to make him more responsive and turn you into a better rider.

1) Again walk trot in both directions to warm up his muscles.

2) Then start doing leg yields on and off the rail down the long side at the walk in both directions. On the short side just concentrate on bending through your corners. When changing directions leg yield across the center of the ring instead of crossing the diagnal.

3) Move up to the sitting trot and do the same thing both directions.

4) Once you feel your horse understands the concept of yielding to your leg, let him just trot normally.

5) Then start doing an extended trot down the long side and a collected sitting trot on the short. Do this both directions as many times around as you want.

6)Let him walk for a little bit.

7)Move up to canter. As you are going around the ring, circle at each end making sure to bend. Do this both directions. If your horse is leaning in, simply lift up your inside rein a bit, slightly shift your weight to the outside, and hold your outside rein.

8) TROT! Do two figure eights.

9) Come down the center line and the quarter lines.

10) CANTER! With your upward transitions make sure not to give away your reins. Do the figure eights and come up and down the center and quarter lines. If your horse does flying changes, fine. Otherwise do simple changes.

11)Walk. Keep it as a forward walk with your leg on during your downward transitions. Tip for downward transitions:
(in this order)
2Eyes up
S2houlders back
Sit down
Hand and leg together

12) Canter eight strides and then do a soft, gradual transition to halt.

13) Work on collection and extension of all the gaits.

14) Continue doing this sort of thing. When you feel confident enough, drop your stirrups and work up your "no stirrups time" gradually. Make sure that your arms don't tense up during your transitions. Feel free to add in trot poles too. Also you can mix parts of this pattern with the suppling exercise too.

I will try to add in new patterns as often as possible.

VET VERANDA

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) What are signs that a horse has colic? and what is it?

Some signs are:
A horse spinning in his stall and trying to bite his stomach/flank.
A horse repeatedly rolling/trying to and groaning.
You notice that there is no manure in his stall.
He is not eating his food.
He is trying to eat manure.
He is generally in distress

Colic is a very common occurence among horses but should not be taken lightly.
It is when a horse has an impaction in their intestines. This happens because they
cannot regurgitate to get stuff out of their system.

2) What do I do if my horse has colic?

You should call the vet first.
However, you should also get your horse walking and give him a soppy bran mash to try and get him going to get something through him.

3) How do I know if my horse is lame?

90% of lamenesses occur in the feet. Signs that your horse is lame are:
You notice him favoring a leg.
He is bobbing his head as he moves.
He is not moving normally and you just sense general discomfort.

4) What do I do if my horse is lame?

First, feel for any heat in the leg and hoof area.
Check for any cuts, swelling or abcesses.(An abcess is a pimple like puss filled
infection in the horse's foot due to a cut. This area would be very warm.)
For ANY lameness, if you don't have the guidance of someone experienced, should be checked out by your vet. Ask somebody who knows what you can do to increase your horse's comfort level.

5) What is Melanoma?

This is a very common type of skin cancer that usually occurs in older grey horses, especially arabs. It is black nodule that looks like a wart, under the skin, usually in the pireneal region. Have a vet check it out, otherwise you won't know if it is benign or malignant.
