| TREKKING THROUGH A MANGROVE FOREST Would you like to trek through the world's largest mangrove forest on the bank of the Bay of Bengal? Sunderbans, the largest mangrove forest, is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger-- the most ferocious and the most magnificent animal on the earth. It is also the home of the spotted and barking deer. The forest is crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers and canals teeming with crocodiles, dolphins and various types of fish. its beds are inundated twice a day. Visitors to this forest have to spend nights on boat. Trekking through the forest, both afoot and by small country boat is possible. But trekking afoot is only for the bravest of the braves. Sunderbans Mangrove Forest is a World Heritage Site declared by the UNESCO in the year 1999. ABOUT THE FOREST The Sundarban forest covers an area of about 10,000 sq. km. The forest is the home of 47 species of mammals, estuarine crocodile, special type of shark, a varity of dolphins, reptiles (45 species) such as python, different types of bird (270 species) and fish (200 species). 334 species of plants grow in the forest. The government of Bangladesh (the land of Bengal)has declared it a reserved forest. The Royal Bengal Tiger is a highly endangered species. Due to government efforts its number has recently started increasing.
