History of Denaby United
********************
The club were founded in 1895, and were immediately
members of the Swinton & District League.
It took until 1902 for progress into the Midland
league, and some sucess with the winning of the
Sheffield Challange Cup in 1906.
The following season saw the Recreation Ground
record set with 4000 present to see Sheffield Wed
reserves in a table top clash. It was in 1910 that
Denaby again took the Sheffield Challange Cup,and
considerations for a new ground were rife.
The Tickhill Square ground was opened in 1912, but
a year later costs lead to resignation from the
Midland League, plying their trade in the Sheffield
League.
In 1921 United were re admitted into the Midland
League.
In 1927 a ground record was set at 5200 loosing to
Southport in the FA Cup.
In 1933 another win in the Sheffield Senior Cup, to
be retained some three years later.
After the war Denaby United were back in the Midland
League, until the league folded in 1960, whence the
club transfered to the Central Alliance League, it
was at this time that the 20-0 record win against
Shirebrook MW was set. Another change of leagues
occured in 1965 this time the Yorkshire League,
which proved the stepping stone in 1982 into the
Northern Counties East League, in 1984 promotion
into the Premier Division was achieved, then in
1987 another Sheffield Senior Cup win, this time
against Emley was the highlight.
In 1997 Denaby United won the North East Counties
League but because of ground problems were not
able to take their rightful place in Northern
Premier League.A great season for the club as all
sides won their respective leagues, whilst the
reserves also took the Montagu Cup.
Denaby United will continue to grow, and compete
at the highest possible level, if you are interested
in assisting that growth then give the club a
call.
The club also has a thriving club shop and an
active commercial section, as well as an award
winning programme.
