*Godzilla News*
*1999 - Present*
(9-4-99) Godzilla 2000 rapped its shooting on August 24th, FX shots are being added now (check Monsterzero.org on the links page for more info). Also, Toho has posted several trailers (actually one trailer divided into 2 parts, or as one piece) plus a behind the scenes video on their webpage. The behind the scenes video is cool as it is a scene with Godzilla trashing a street. You get to see how fast the actor has to move (watch the tail) before his actions are slowed down for the final print.
Filming of Godzilla 2000 will commence in May. Check out Cinescape Online for designs of the latest Godzilla incarnation. Look under the archive for 4-16-99. Also, check out June 22nd's update at Cinescape. They have a picture of the Godzilla's jaw (Toho is slowly releasing images of the new suit. There is now a "teaser" for Godzilla 2000. The "teaser" consists of scenes from the previous movies and then ends with the logo for the new film.

4-3-98 Just bought the official GODZILLA COMPENDIUM.
Buy this book. It has reviews of all the movies (nothing new),
but then it has pics of the official posters for each movie,
each book cover, and it classifies each monster. It is also
full of great black and white photos. for $16 it is a great
buy.

Latest GODZILLA related articles
OK, here goes my summary of the articles in the
retrospective. The opening of the retrospective describes how the
idea of Godzilla came about, and who the people were behind it. Then
it goes into those people. First on the list is Akira Ifukube, the
composer of the series' music. Some of his other scores are listed,
but as expected they stay mostly with Godzilla.
Next up is an article about the unrealesed sequels. The newest info
in this article is that Tri-Star is denying that they have the rights
to release the unreleased sequels in the US. This is followed by a
review of DESTROYER.
Next we get into the special effects of the series with an interview
with Teruyoshi Nakano. This interview offers a lot of insight into
why some of the special effects from the early sequels were so bad,
and it also shows Nakano's love for his work despite some of the
early criticism he recieved.
Once again we take a jump now and discuss the LA Film Festival where
3 uncut Godzilla movies were shown.
Jump again to an interview with Yoshio Tsuchiya who played many roles
in the old series, including the Controller form planet X. This is
followed by interviews with two of the men who were in the Godzilla
suit for most of the movies.
Now we backtrack to the Original movie, and a comparison between the
American and Japanese releases. This is definitely worth the time it
takes to read it. There is also a short article on an unmade Godzilla
3D movie that was to be made back in 1984 and would have been the
first American Godzilla movie.
Check out CINEFANTASTIQUE Vol 28 Num 6 on newstands
now. It contains a 40 years of Godzilla Retrospective. This
retrospective has articles about the new movies, the music
from the series, the FX, Godzilla vs Destroyer, the L.A. film
festival, the creature controllers, the men in the suits, and
an article about the first movie. I'll do a summary at a
later date (like when I'm not bogged down by class work).
Latest News on American Movie.
10-16-97 SPOILER WARNING
A rumor has been going around about Matthew Brodercik and Company
battling a bunch of baby Godzillas at the end of the movie.
Cinescape Magazine confirmed these reports in their new issue
that shipped this week. The confirmation can be found on page 24
under the title BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. The reason for that title
is that this scene will more or less ripoff the raptor scene from
Jurassic Park, as well as leave the door open for a
sequel.
Other news confirmed in the article are Godzilla's color changing ability (descrined as being added because Devlin couldn't think
of a way for Godzilla to escape in one scene), Godzilla being
asexual, and Godzilla's increased speed.
Confirmed for the movie are Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, and
Hank Azaria, no other stars have been announced.
4-20-97, Anniston is not in the movie
Several sources have claimed that Matthew Broderick (Cable Guy, Jennifer
Anniston (TV's FRIENDS), and Jean Reno (The Pofessional) are all signed
to star in the Tristar Movie. Now only if they could get John Cusak instead of Broderick.
Taken From Sci-Fi Entertainment, February 1997 (Added 1-3-97)
Once again Devlin and Emmrich's involvement in the new
film is confirmed. New Godzilla designs for the movie
have been completed, and are in the hands of
Trendmasters Toys. The budget is set at $90 million.
The script has not yet been written because Devlin
was waiting for Toho's approval of his story ideas,
and this approval, though slow in coming, was just
received.
Taken from Fangoria #154 in an interview with Dean
Devlin:
Dean Devlin was interviewed about ID4 in
the latest Fangoria. In this interview he briefly
discussed the American Godzilla movie that he
will be making with director Roland Emmerich.
The movie will be made for TriStar Pictures from a
script Devlin will write. He said a script already
does exist, but they want a new one. Devlin
promises a fresh take on Godzilla, making him meaner,
bigger, and able to travel atextreme speeds
(he compares his Godzilla to a gecko running).
Hopefully it will be all he promises.
Taken from CINESCAPE Vol 2 #10:
According to a short article in this magazine, it has
now been officially announced that Devlin and Emmerich
will write and direct the American Godzilla movie.
According to the article this descision was made
because of the great reviews that INDEPENDENCE DAY
is getting prior to its release. It also says that
they were chosen because they are one of the more
budget friendly teams out there at the moment.
Also watch out for Peter Jackson's remake of KING KONG
around the same time as the Godzilla movie is released.
Taken from CINEFANTASTIQUE Vol. 28 No. 1: Everything in
this article has been reported already with a few minor
exceptions. One exception is that Emmerich and Devlin
are creating their own script for the movie.
They plan on using minatures and CGI sequences to bring
Godzilla to life as well as keep the cost down. I suggest
reading this article for yourselves though. It
interviews both Jan De Bont about how he planned on handling
the movie (before leaving the project), as well as
giving Emmerich and Devlin's views. It also says Stan
Winston may do the Godzilla designs. He was under contract
to do them for De Bont, but it is unknown if Emmerich
and Devlin will use his designs.
Look for GAMERA, GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE to hit US
theatres this fall. It will be the first time
since GODZILLA 1985 that a Japanese monster movie recieved
theatrical release in the US. If it does well, you can
expect GAMERA 2 CULT CLASSIC. This CD has 2 versions of their song about
Godzilla stomping Tokyo. It is pretty cool. The original version
of the song can be found on their CD (One ???) ENCHANTED EVENING,
which also features the classic DON'T FEAR THE REAPER.
