The island of Dominica is the largest in the Windward Islands although it is only 29 miles long and 16 miles wide (map). It is located approximately halfway between Puerto Rico and Trinidad. The island is the most rugged and mountainous in the Caribbean and its volcanic origins are still very much in evidence. It has an excellent rainforest cover and is replete with rivers, waterfalls and even a prominent boiling lake, one of the world's largest of its type. The abundant marine life around the island is also one of its principal attractions.
