Jimmy Buffett..."Bubba" to his friends, is a true legend of his time. Born James William Buffett on December 25, 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the "Margaritaville" man lived the life of an average child. He attented McGill Toolen Catholic School where he was a varsity cheerleader and went to college at Auburn University of which he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He later graduated at Southern Mississippi University after leaving Auburn. Jimmy was married two times, the first of which he married Margie Washichek in 1969, however, that only lasted two years. The second and final time was to Jane Slagsvol of Columbia, South Carolina. Jane and Jimmy are still together happily today after some rocky years and have three children named Savannah Jane, Sarah Delaney, and Cameron Marley which was named after the musician Bob Marley, one of Jimmy's favorites. Jimmy started his music career like many artists, broke and unpopular. His first band was actually a group of fictional characters that Jimmy concocted as a joke. The backup group was called the "Coral Reefer Band" and had peculiar names such as: Marvin Gardens (guitar and country maracas), Kay Pasa (bass), Kitty Litter (background vocals), and Al Vacado (drums). Jimmy later added "real" people to his band, one of which Michael Utley is still with the band today. And another original Greg "Fingers" Taylor left the band only last year. Currently, Jimmy has over 32 albums to his credit, with a few going double platinum. He is noted mostly for his famous songs "Margaritaville" and "Why Don't We Get Drunk", "Come Monday" and "A Pirate Looks At Forty. His most recent album, "Far Side Of The World" was released on March 19, 2002.
Although Jimmy is fast approaching retirement age he has stated many times that he will not retire until he no longer has fun performing. Hopefully that means he will be around for another twenty years or more.
Jimmy Buffett began his career in the late sixty's and his first album didn't come until 1970, it was Down To Earth. His latest album is Far Side Of The World which was released in March 2002. He has 32 albums in between which isn't too bad for a singer thats only had about 4 or 5 top 20 hits. Jimmy's first big hit was Come Monday but what most people don't know his first song was Abandoned On Tuesday which didn't make it real big. Margaritaville is his athem song which is from the album Son Of A Son Of A Sailor. My favorite Buffett song is A Pirate Looks At Forty which is from Jimmy's album A1A released in 1974. But I have so many favorite Buffett songs, Hell did he ever sing a bad song. I don't think so. Although you don't hear him on the radio much he is one of the top concert draws in the world. Every year all of his concert sell out, many months prior to the concert. The last three years in a row he has rated in the top 25 concert draws in the world.
Another great Buffett song that most people haven't heard is from the Volcano album, it is Dreamcycle check it out. Some other great Buffett songs are We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About from the album One Particular Harbor from 1983. From the album Last Mango In Paris from 1985 there are two of my favorites one being Last Mango In Paris which is written about his good friend Captain Tony Terracina who was the owner of Captain Tony's Saloon and twice Mayor of Key West, Florida. He was also once a sailing ship captain back in the old days, and If The Phone Doesn't Ring It's Me which is also a great song. I could go on and on. I have met Jimmy once at his house on Waddell Street in Key West which he has now sold, it was right beside one of the most famous restaurants and bars in the world, Louie's Back Yard. I have met Captain Tony 4 times at his bar and saloon in Key West, he is quite a character to be 85 years young. Long live the Captain.
PHINS UP TO ALL YOU PARROTHEADS AND FOREVER LIVE KING JIMMY, THE KING OF CARIBBEAN SOUL, DRUNK ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC.
