Backstreet Boys' incredible saga began four years ago in Orlando, Florida. It was there that high school students A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough and junior high student Nick Carter began to run into each other at local acting auditions. The three young men became friends and formed a singing group, inspired in part by Boyz II Men and Color Me Badd. The trio then decided to expand, by two. They met Kevin Richardson through a mutual friend. After scouring Orlando for a fifth member, Kevin thought of his cousin Brian Littrell, who was in Kentucky. A phone call was made, Brian relocated and The Backstreet Boys were ready to write the first chapter of their story.
At first the group did some of their favorite cover tunes, a practice that continues even today. Laughs Brian, "We still do Shai's If I Ever Fall in Love," but eventually they began to find their own distinctive sound. Stressing their strong harmonies and a blend of pop and R&B, the fivesome began to try to secure a record deal. "We'd go to local labels and sing a capella in their foyers," recalls Howie. "We'd sing anywhere, for anybody."
The hard work began to pay off and within six months of forming, BSB had become one of Florida's hottest live acts. They played everything from a high school gymnasium, Grad Night at Sea World, to an opening slot for Brandy. With all that stage experience and an indie single Tell Me That I'm Dreaming under their belts, BSB started writing the next chapter.
It came time for the boys to meet. KEVIN Richardson, from Kentucky, became fed up with the top 40 cover band he was in, so he packed up his things and moved to Orlando. A week later, he had a job working as a tour guide for Disney World. He spent the rest of his time working on his singing and songwriting. KEVIN heard about those three 'guys that harmonize all the time' from a friend at work, and soon after, he was introduced to A.J., HOWIE, and NICK. Immediately, they decided to team up. They just needed one more member to complete the cast. Kevin made a call to his cousin in Kentucky and the next day, BRIAN got on a plane and headed to Florida. The group was complete. They named themselves after the Orlando landmark, the Backstreet Market. The BACKSTREET BOYS were on their way.
The new-found fame brought some unwanted worries. Kevin revealed: "It was strange at first. Our popularity in Europe was so big and the number of fans was amazing. We would leave Europe and have a couple of hundred fans at the airport, then we would come home to the US and have no one know who we were. We used to fly home and be normal people, but now our music and popularity in the States is beginning to grow, so that gap is getting smaller and there are fewer places we can go and not be recognised. It's very exciting, but scary at the same time. My family have already been forced to change their telephone numbers and I'm worried my mom will have to move. The rest of my family think its quite exciting and they're really cool about it, but I want my mom to keep her privacy. I just wanna make sure she's safe."
Suddenly, the boys' families were targeted by fans and were dogged by phone calls from strangers at all hours of the night and even visits from girls who had driven hundreds of miles to find the places where the boys had grown up. Fans would frequently turn up at the Littrell or Richardson family homes in deepest Kentucky and Nick's parents were so plagued by visitors that they were forced to put up an iron fence around their house.
Since they began, they've gone multi-platinum in sixteen different countries. They've sold over ten million records. They've scored four top-ten singles. They have a number one hit "Quit Playing Games(with my heart)" They won a countless number of awards, including the 1996 MTV Europe Viewers Choice Award, in a category that included Oasis, Spice Girls, and Jamiroquai.
