The Macedonian city of Bitola was established in the VII th century, very close to the Antique-Macedonian town Heraclea Lincestis. The town is situated in the western part of Pelagonia plain, at the foot of the Baba mountain with its peak Pelister. The town has always had a distinguished place and role in the painstriking history of the Macedonian people.
Ever since its foundation, as a result of its geographical position on the Balcan Peninsula (situated on the Roman road Via Egnatea), Bitola of te past was the site of historic events which are considered to have been the turning-point in the life and development of the peoples living in this region.

During the Medievel period, Bitola was a rich trading center. It was conquered by the Turks in the end of the XIV th century. In the XIX th century it menaged to preserve the primacy of a leading city, with developed trading relations, exceeding the other towns both in wealth and beauty. This town with European fashion and architecture was a center of a great number of consulates of many European countries. Between the two World Wars Bitola like the all other Macedonian towns had experienced the same destiny.

During the War for National Liberation Bitola took an active part by giving many warriers, anong which 3013 fallen Jews from Bitola in the fascist camp of death.

On November, 4 th, 1944 Bitola was liberated and the Macedonian people constituted its own and free state. Within the period of 47 years, the town has changed its image and life. From a town of about 30,000 inhabitians, it raidly grew up to about 90,000 inabitians. Today Bitola is an educational, cultural and health center with developed infra-structure, agriculture, industry, handycrafts, public
health service, transportation and also with developed net of primary and secondary schools, University, Society of science and art, a dozen cultural institutions, inteligentsia and important achievments in the fields of sciences and arts, etc.

The town abounds in significant cultural monuments inherited in the course of the past centuries.

The town is a host of many cultural manifestations: The festival of film camera "Milton Manaki", Festival of folk songs and dances "Ilinden days", child art studio
"Small Monmartre", etc.

Bitola is also proud of its national park "Pelister", rising at 2601 meters above sea level. It is an outstanding ski area with exceptional natural beauties, two glacial
lakes, molica pine forest and mountain lodges.

Today, Bitola has all perspectives for further growth in all fields of life in the free Macedonian state.
