Khazad-dum was the greatest of all Dwarven establishments. It was called Moria by the elves, after the dwarves closed their doors on the outside during the time when Sauron became powerful in the second age. Khazad-dum is the only place that Mithril has been discovered, Mithril meaning True silver, and being the strongest, and lightest material found.
Khazad-dum was built by Durin the Deathleses, the father of dwarves. Khazad-dum is located in the Misty mountains, and are vast, stretching far beneith the mountains. For many ages Khazad-dum became extremely wealthy, but their greed proved to be a disaster. They dug so deep that they released a Balrog. The Balrog most likely got there, after fleeing from the Valar after the War of Wrath. The Balrog slew two of their kings before they retreated from Khazad-dum, and left it to be inhabited by orcs.
Now Khazad-dum was widely refered to has Moria (black pit). In the third age, Balin (once a member of the company of Thorin Oakenshield, in The Hobbit) went to Moria with a small army of dwarves. They lived in Moria for five years before they were finally destroyed. They were caught between the Balrog, and watcher (beast at front gate, in Fellowship of the Ring).
When the fellowship entered Moria, in the third age, the Balrog was destroyed by Tharkun (gandalf). They had many battles, and finally Tharkun destroyed the balrog, and was almost destroyed himself.
Now in the fourth age of Middle earth, Moria is free of the balrog, and there is hope. The dwarves of Middle earth are coming together to take back Moria, and restore it to what it 0nce was, Khazad-dum!
